Upgrading and face – lifting are two different entities when it comes to Motorcycles. However, it so happens unfortunately in India that they can mean anything for anything. But for the 2012 Pulsar it was not either of these. It was a whole new bike by itself.

Naked bike is by itself a whole new breed for Bajaj Auto. But, one has to insanely agree upon the fact that Bajaj has always kept its pulse on the mindset of Indian youth which is why Pulsars are considered to be youth icon. Now, they should have realized that naked bikes are the sensation in Indian market. So, in simple terms, this time it's the NS (Naked Sport) for 'PulsarManiacs.'

Pulsars, though claims to be sport – bikes are never preferred to be used on tracks even upon mods. I think that has made Bajaj Auto think about it and act accordingly. As I mentioned above, this is a whole new bike which has got features and technologies incorporated on this bike for the first time.

The 200NS is powered by a 200cc, 4 valves, single cylinder engine and thought on spark plugs have gone beyond DTS-i. This time, it incorporates triple spark ignition, which is one of its kind and Bajaj Auto has got unique patents pending for it. That's a great advantage for the company indeed and no two words on that. The DTS-i engine aided the company in scaling new heights in terms of dominance and sales. Expect the same from this engine as well. However, the abbreviation for this new engine wasn't mentioned there and so I don't know how it will be named. Probably, TTS-i!

The engine is designed is such a way that the engine coolant goes through the gap between all the spark plugs ensuring better and rapid cooling of engine. That should be a great boon for guys who are gonna rev, rev and rev up this bike. The venture carb will do its work brilliantly.

Talking about ht external appearance, the bike looks really aggressive. The headlamp though is not the same as the fox – eyed ones; it is indeed got its cues from the older ones. The body lines are basically derived from the Pulsars elder siblings so that it keeps up the tradition of Pulsar, carrying it front and forward. A close observation would reveal the way the engine compartment looks like. It is tightly packed offering a real sport – bike look and I loved the way this is done. Good work chaps!

We've been having the conventional exhausts for a long time with just very minor changes made to this. This really needed a drastic change. The Pulsar 200NS now incorporates low slung central exhaust which takes the Pulsars to the next level. This would enhance the bike's handling in the track. Since there is no weight onto the sides, handling this bike in the track should be fun to be with. Also, the time taken for retrieving it back to the position takes less time than the conventional ones.

All the performance aspects of the Pulsar 200NS are compared with the P220 and the reason for this being that Bajaj considers this model to be the epitome of performance. Bajaj claims that the Pulsar 200NS claims that the time taken for 0 -60 kmph is 3.61 seconds and can manage to claim a top speed of 136 kmph.

The frame strength in the Pulsar 200NS is as much as 50 per cent more rigid than the P220, the Fastest Indian. Also, the damping characteristics of this bike are just great. 'Damping' refers to 'the capacity built into a mechanical or electrical device to prevent excessive correction and the resulting instability or oscillatory conditions.'

To mention about the brakes, both the wheels are fitted with discs to offer enhanced braking experience. The dimensions of the front disc is 280 mm and that of the rear is 230 mm. Nitrox filled mono – cross suspension is expected to do a great job on this bike.

The rear looks more stunning now. The tail light is the same double strap that is a part of identity of all Pulsars. I liked the way the rear number plate holder is placed. It is derived front he KTM Dukes and that makes the bike a worth for the bucks spent on it.

The variant now launched is a Naked Sports one. Mr. Bajaj said that there are chances of a fairing version which might be launched in a few months, though he was not very certain about it. Also, there could be more than one Pulsar on the way for the Indian market awaiting for us. Also on display was a Pulsar with yellow colour scheme. It looked really fresh and the scheme itself is a new one for Bajaj products.

There was one fact that I didn't like about this bike. From long shots, the 200NS resembles the 135 LS to a greater extent. Otherwise, it is a good looking bike though it resembles the Honda CB1000R perfectly. This is again not intentional but it so happened as such.

But, what surprises me is when Mr. Bajaj declared the price, he should have been specific about it. He just said generically that it'll be priced at less than a lakh of bucks. But, taking the features and technologies that this bike features, one needn't be hesitant to pay this sum of money.

Mumbai, 30 January 2012: A little more than 10 years since the original Pulsar was launched, Bajaj Auto today unveiled the Next Gen Pulsar 200NS. This new Pulsar is all set to re-define Motorcycling technology and design as-much-as the original Pulsars did way back in 2001.

At the heart of the new Pulsar is its cutting-edge engine which sets new benchmarks in performance, emission and incidentally also fuel efficiency. The DTS-i (Digital Twin Spark-ignition) technology launched in 2003 marked a unique first in the history of Indian Motoring.

The new Pulsar takes this technology altogether to another level with a SOHC 4-valve Triple Spark engine controlled by an advanced Electronic Control Unit for an absolutely unmatched performance. To support this exhilarating heart-pumping performance the bike comes with liquid cooling and a six speed gear box.

The Pulsar 200NS chassis comprises a pressed steel perimeter frame and a Rectangular tube section swing arm delivering over three times the lateral stiffness of a P220 frame. These deliver outstanding high speed handling and cornering stability. The centrally located muffler and the unique gas filled Nitrox mono suspension further improve the ride and handling of the bike due to low & centralized CG position.

The Pulsar design character has evolved with the performance & dynamics. It's become stronger, more aggressive with a street fighter stance. The look just begs you to ride it. Once astride, the sporty speedo console, triple-tree clip-ons, the signature clips and the illuminated switches evoke the design, fit and finish so far exclusively reserved for much more expensive super sports bikes. Remember the Ducati Panigale? It broke its wraps off in the month of November last year. This new superbike from the high performance stable of Ducati launched this bike in Milan, Italy.

Ducati has now started the official production for this bike – The Panigale. It's been manufactured in the company's state – of – the – art manufacturing facility in Bologna. The first bike coming off the assembly line was ridden by The Doctor – Valentino Rossi who rides for the Ducati in MotoGp.

This historic event was witnessed by the entire team of Ducati manufacturing unit along with Mr Gabriele Del Torchio, President, Ducati, Mr Claudio Domenicali, General Director, Ducati and Mr Silvano Fini, Plant Director. The first Ducati 1199 Panigale is seen in the images here getting baptised by sprinkling sparkling wine.

To get a small flashback effect, this is what Ducati President Mr. Gabriele Del Torchio commented at the time of Panigale's launch. ”Without doubt, this has been the most ambitious project in Ducati's history and underlines our engineering excellence and 'product emotion,' an aspect of our brand which, in such a competitive market place, has become more important than ever. This motorcycle represents pure Italian style, the reference point for performance and a safety-enhanced, confidence-inspiring experience for our customers on road and track."

The most interesting part of this bike is basically its frame which is a monocoque one, which reduces parts, reduces the weight of the parts and is designed to make the claimed 195 hp. Earlier, the Italian bike maker was making use of trellis frame and this is the first time the company is trying this out here. The swing – arm is also an all aluminium one which again aids in reducing the weight considerably.

Panigale makes use of the new Superquadro engine which is claimed to be most powerful twin – cylinder as on date. The name – Superquadro is named after it's highly oversquare dimensions – 112 X 60.8mm L-Twin. Besides its standard L-configuration and Desmodromic valve control system, Ducati also started with a clean slate for the powerplant of this performance machine. The company also rotated the top end of the signature 90 -degree L backwards around the crankshaft which gives six – degrees more clearance on the front wheel and allowed the front-to-rear bias to be skewed slightly to a 52 per cent front bias.

The other features of this bike are Ducati Riding Mode which oversees functions of the ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DCT), Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES), Ducati Quick Shift (DQS), Ducati's race – derived Engine Brake Control (EBC), and Ride by Wire throttle system. Even the full colour Thin File Transistor display changes according to the mode selected by the rider.

There were three variants of bikes launched under the Panigale badge Viz, the 1199 Panigale, 1199 Panigale S and 1199 Panigale S Tricolore (don't worry, the spelling is not a typo error!).

The 1199 Panigale's chassis represents a pioneering frame design in the history of bike industry. The frame designed for Panigale is unification of condensed and lightweight element. The Superquadro engine itself is main stress member of the frame, and forms an engine based frame design where engine itself acts as an integral part of frame and carries various load. The engine based frame is directly attached to the cylinder heads of the Superquadro engine, obtruding the engine forward to assemble the steering system. This arrangement helps to generate more space for the airbox, which got sheltered and preserved under the lightweight aluminium fuel tank.

The electronic front suspensions used on Panigale is fully adjustable with respect to spring length and damping ratio. These suspension tuning can be made either by using the pre-programmed Riding Modes, or in independent mode, which allows riders to generate and use their own special combinations. The rear suspension of the 1199 Panigale features a smart and convenient side-mounting instead of central monocross. This mounting helps to increase room for the rear cylinder head, which has been tilted more towards the rear to concentrate the mass. The exclusive positioning of rear suspension provides more free length of spring against pre-loading conditions and also helps to adjust seat elevation according to rider's height.

Ducati 1199 Panigale uses the four pistons callipers, two pistons on each side of the front disc. 330 mm diameter front discs allow quick heat rejection to attain stunning braking performance. The 1199 Panigale carries a very newest and for sport adjusted ABS to allow full combination with the three different programmed Riding Modes.

This ABS operates with the latest generation 9ME Bosch processor. When kept in Race mode, the system applies full ABS on the front wheel only. This allows the rider to have braking drift on the rear wheel during extreme riding conditions on race track. This ABS system also possesses a sophisticated and precise "Rear lift-up" sensor to measure the rear wheel lift. This sensor reads and feeds the lifting amount of rear wheel to the processor to avoid stoppie. Obviously this is done to avoid power loss as well as saving lap time.

The 1199 Panigale comes loaded with newly designed 10-spoke wheels in 90 mm front rim width and 154 mm rear. All 1199 Panigale editions come with the Pirelli Diablo Supercorsa SP tyres. The front tyre has the same dimensions as other superbikes have which is 120/70 ZR17.

Her is the pricing details of the Ducati Panigale series. The 1199 Panigale is priced at USD 24,000, 1199 Panigale ABS variant at USD 25,195, the 1199 Panigale S ABS variant at USD 31,595, the 1199 Panigale S Tricolore variant at USD 37,585.

Ever since KTM Duke 125cc was launched in Europe every bike enthusiast just waiting to see KTM Duke 125cc launch in India. Most of them were disappointed when Duke 125cc was launched in Europe with the configuration of 15 bhp power, top speed of 80 KM (due to European norms for under 18) and the price tag of nearly Rs. 2.8 lakhs. But the real surprised came when Bajaj Auto announced that India will get a bigger Duke at an attractive price.

Indian bike enthusiasts were eagerly waiting for Duke 200 India launch after it was launched in Malaysia and Europe. Finally the wait is over now. Bajaj Auto has launched Duke 200 on 24^th January in Delhi and the booking will start from February 1^st week across the country. But why one should buy Duke 200 when there is Pulsar 220, Karizma, YZF-R15 V2.0, Honda CBR250R and upcoming Honda CBR150R, next generation Pulsar and Hyosung GT250R? Let's have a look.

Supremely Engineered and Highly Reliable Engine

Duke 200 engine reflects traditional quality of KTM. It is compact yet delivers high performance. The single cylinder, liquid cooled, four valve, DOHC (Double Overhead Camshaft) with DLC (Diamond like Coated) coated finger followers engine has bore x stroke of 72 x 49 mm which gives it engine displacement of 199.5cc. The bore x stroke ratio of 1.47 suggests this is an oversquare / short stroke engine and produces maximum torque at higher speed.

The engine generates maximum power of 18.4 KW/ 25 bhp @ 10,000 rpm and maximum torque of 19.2 NM @ 8,000 rpm. The power to weight ratio of 184 bhp / tonne is even more impressive than bhp and best in class thanks to its kerb weight of 136 Kg. It has got high tech cylinder head similar to those used by KTM on their top level racing bikes. It comes with Balancer shaft which reduces annoying vibrations. Duke 200 comes with very high compression ratio of 11.5:1 which requires high octane quality of fuel like Speed or Xtra premium.

The fuel delivery is managed by world class Bosch electronic fuel injection. The fuel injection mapping starts working as soon as the gear is engaged. The 38mm throttle body ensures instant acceleration, maximum performance and low level of fuel consumption. Thanks to the electronic functionality and gear sensor, the maximum speed is limited in sixth gear to level permitted in the respective country.

The transmission is handled by six speed gear box and wet multi disc clutch which is mechanically operated. It has got single centrally placed spark plug which ensures optimum ignition. To control the overheating issues the engine comes with liquid cooling system. It has got centrally located exhaust which is something new in India. The compact three chamber silencer with three way catalytic converter has been placed between rear wheel and the engine due to which it seems that there is absence of exhaust pipe. The central location of exhaust also has an advantage of low centre of gravity. The rotary sound like exhaust note is a unique feature and suggest an arrival of monster.

This is an engine which is meant to be revved hard. The engine produces lower level of emissions and high level of fuel efficiency. Overall it's supremely engineered and highly refined and reliable engine which is choice of every bike enthusiasts across the world.

Trellis Frame and Aluminum Swing Arm

Duke 200 has got the Chromium-Molybdenum trellis frame with steel sub frame. It is important to know what a trellis frame means. According to motorcycle racing research major advantages are to be gained in terms of rigidity by joint the steering head to the swing arm in as short a distance possible. A steering head is at top of the frame. The frame is made up of large number of short steel (or aluminum) tube welded together to form a trellis. It is easy to manufacture and extremely strong as well. It has unique aluminum die cast swing arm which is light yet extremely stable. It has got wheelbase of 1367mm which is widest enough to do better cornering. The bike weighs only 136 Kg despite having 200cc engine, widest tyre, USD suspension, liquid cooler. The light weight is result of KTM's traditional quality of having precise and compact components and excluding unnecessary components. It has 165 mm (6.50 inch) of ground clearance which is enough for most of the bumpy riding. Overall the chassis is light weight, well built and enhances a rider's confidence.

Radial Tyres & 10 Spoke Rim

Duke 200 has got one of the widest tyres in its class. It has also got 10 spoke alloy wheel which suits its naked look. The front rim size is of 3" x 17" and the rear rim size of 4" x 17". The die cast aluminum wheels are specially designed by KTM to make it lightweight yet extremely stable. It has got MRF REVZ FC radial tubeless tyres with the front tyre size of 110/70 * 17 and rear tyre size of 150/60 * 17. It is to be noted that this are radial tyres so it comes with an advantage of shorter barking distance, better road grip, low fuel consumption and better life over a normal tyre. Further the tyre size is large enough for any kind of road conditions.

Brembo Brakes

Duke 200 has got one of the finest braking system in its class. It has got disc brakes from Bybre, a subsidiary brembo brakes (world's leader in disc brakes). The front has got 230 mm disc with single piston floating caliper and the rear got 280 mm four piston radially bolted caliper. The rear disc is one of the widest in its class.

WP Suspension

Duke 200 has another novelty in suspension department. It comes with WP Upside down (USD) front suspension which is also better known as Inverted forks. The upside down system has tubes at bottom and bodies at the top which improves handling by reducing the unsprung weight of the motorcycle. The USD suspension is mostly found on Sports motorcycle. What's more, the upside down suspension has 43 mm internal tubes one of the largest in its class.

This isn't enough the rear got WP Monoshock suspension. WP Suspension is one of the leading European companies in suspension and it supplies to some of the reputed name in Europe like BMW and Triumph.

Street fighter Styling and robust Build Quality

As far styling concern Duke 200 has got naked street fighter looks. The bull inspired front headlight suits its street fighter look. The motorcycle looks massive from the front due to its wider tyre and naked headlight. The diamond inspired LED tail lights are good enough to catch anyone's eyes. The LED side blinkers looks cool with headlight and taillight. The nicely design saree guard, grab rail and rear hugger enhances its rear look. The bull inspired fuel tank offers enough knee recess and the air craft type fuel tank filler looks gorgeous on Duke fuel tank. Both the side look of Duke 200 leaves an impression of higher displacement bike due to an over square engine and wider tyres. Duke 200 comes with top notch paint quality. It comes with KTM inspired orange color, however we may see other color option in near future. Overall it has top class built quality with pure naked street fighter look.

Best in class Instrument panel

Generally an instrument panel introduction is included in electrical but the Duke 200 has got most sophisticated and functional instrument panel which is best in class and available only on top end bikes and cars. It has got digital instrumental panel where you can have average speed during trip, average fuel consumption, distance to empty, distance to service, dot matrix messages, ready to race message. The list does not end here; it has two trip meters with additional F mode apart from digital speedometer, rpm meter, a digital watch and gear indicator. You can also know the temperature level of engine. You can also set the rpm limit for you motorcycle and it will not go above that. A shift RPM alarm fro driver helps in shifting the gears. The instrumental panel has indicators for side, neutral, high beam, side stand, low fuel level and low battery. It has one of the widest digital instrumental panels in its class.

Electricals

It has headlamp roll ON during rolling downgrade: This means there is a vertical compensation for the angle created on an incline or decline, something like the adaptive headlight in the K1600, but way less advanced than that since the one on the KTM will not compensate for the lean. The front headlight and rear tail light has got 60/55W bulbs. It also got zero maintenance 8AH VRLA battery which ensures you will never out of power supply. The Duke 200 number plate has also got LED illumination. What more you can also modify the tank illumination by aftermarket tank LED. It has got Backlit control switches which includes side indicator, low high beam, headlight turn on/off, turn indicators and engine kill switch.

Best in Class Ride and Handling

Duke has best in class ride and handling abilities thanks to its class leading frame, tyres and suspension. The riding position is upright which ensures that you will not get tired in long journeys. It has the hydroformed handlebars for better strength and clamping location. The handle bars provide an excellent feedback while high speed cornering. The high speed straight line stability of Duke, is a second to none.

The seat height from ground is just 810mm, perfect for an Indian average height of 5.6 inches. The wide rider seat has enough padding but the rear seat is bit narrow. The fuel tank offers enough knee recess.

Outstanding Performance & Fuel Efficiency

The performance figure suggests why Duke 200 is a true hooligan street bike. It can achieve 0-60 speed in just 3.3 seconds which is a quicker than the competition, 0-100 speed in slight over 9 second again quicker than the competition. Even the rolls on figures are quicker than the competition. The 0-120 race is an effortless job on Duke 200. However, after this speed it takes time to achieve the top speed of the motorcycle which is around 135KM/ hour. It is not one of the fastest motorcycles in its class but yes its one of the quickest motorcycles in its class. KTM did not claim any fuel efficiency figures but showroom guy confirmed that you can expect mileage of 30 Kilometer / liter which is acceptable given the power figures and the engine performance.

European brand

Duke 200 is a first European motorcycle in its class. European motorcycle brands have more aspirational value compared to Japanese motorcycle brands. Be it any brand Ducati, BMW, Aprilia, Triumph or KTM. The pride of owning a European motorcycle has much more values which you will not get with R15 or CBR250R. What's more there is a range of accessories like gloves, jackets, t-shirts, bags etc. and aftermarket parts like chain, sprocket, illumination set, seat cowl, handle guard etc. to make a perfect KTM club.

Largest and Dedicated Service Center

People are always worried about quality and availability of service station in case of sports motorcycle. With Duke 200 you get 34 dedicated showroom and service centers throughout India which is largest for any specific motorcycle (these service stations were before pro biking showrooms of Bajaj). The competition like CBR250R and R15 does not have any sole dedicated service station which the Duke has.

Mouthwatering Price

Duke 125 is sold at 4,400 Euro (Rs. 2,87,000) in Europe which is almost 600 Euro (Rs. 40,000) more than the competition and still it became the number 1 motorcycle in its category by sales after few months of launch. So what kind of price did you expect for KTM Duke 200 in India? We expected price range of Rs. 1.2 lacs to Rs. 1.4 lacs. However, Bajaj Auto has undercut our expected price range by Rs. 2,500. The Duke 200 has been launched at an introductory price of Rs. 1,17,500, Ex-showroom Delhi (On road around Rs. 1,30,000) which is an outstanding price considering its qualitative parts and European brand. It has all the quality of European brand except one thing, European motorcycle brand premium compared to Japanese motorcycle brand. Duke 200 is just Rs. 10,000 more than the R15 and Rs. 30,000 less than the CBR250R.

Verdict

Duke 200 is an outstanding motorcycle, the only thing which it short fall is a top speed. However, considering a street fighter motorcycle it needs to be quickest rather than fastest and Duke over score competition in this department. If you are ok with top speed this is the motorcycle in 250 cc segment you should go for. So guys, ready to race?

We have hardly one full day left and that is all the time we’ve to talk about the next gen Pulsar. Post that no more speculations and expectations as the bike would’ve been launched and I'll not have time to discuss about it as I'll be covering the launch out there in Mumbai for our dear readers.

This time the launch crates more hype than any other bike for the reason that its not just one bike that's getting launched but an entire series. So, for all reasons its worth to wait with fingers crossed for the bike which has completed 10 full year of nothing but success in India.

Bajaj has finally updated its MyPulsar website which is a website uniquely designed and dedicated for the Pulsar fans who are referred to as 'PulsarManiacs'. The site features a bike covered in blue sheet and the most interesting part of the story is that not even a single part of the bike is exposed! So, no guesses this time too.

The webpage also has a clock running at the top which simply determines how much time is left for the bike to be revealed. Er, well! That's the term I gotta use here. As Indians we are only used to hearing and talking about two segments of bikes. One being sport – bikes and the other, the street bikes. The former is known for its speed and performance while the latter is known for aggressive and brutal looks. Yhese days, we slightly get involved with the third category – Cruisers. But, there is one more category which is least penetrated into the Indian sub – continent. It is nothing but what is commonly referred to as 'Adventure Motorcycles.'

For a guy who is pretty familiar with this term, the first image that would strike his mind woulds be (and has to be) the BMW R1200GS. This particular model was launched way back in the year 2004 as a successor to the R1150GS. However, the R1200GS Adventure model was launched only towards the fag end of 2005 and came to market a year later.

According to Wikipedia, 'The R1200GS is the best selling motorcycle that BMW has built, on 3 August 2007 it produced the 100,000th model. In 2006, the R1200GS was the best selling motorcycle in the United Kingdom. The two models had combined sales of 2,227 units, compared with the next best selling bike, the Honda Fireblade which sold 2,067 units. Nearly one third of the 100,000 units sold by BMW Motorrad worldwide in 2006 were R1200GS. In 2008, the R1200GS was once again BMW’s best selling motorcycle, with 22,845 standard models and 12,460 Adventure models being delivered'.

A typical adventure bike will have a kind of design that would be ideally suited for sheer off – roading kinda rides and for touring purposes as well. It's become a signature for Adventure bikes to have high front mud guards or flaps and a small visor over the headlamp which'll usually remain without a fairing.

Now, KTM is planning for a rival against the much reputed BMW R1200GS. The all-new KTM Adventure will house a 1290cc V – twin engine which is expected to produce around 130bhp . This figure is 25bhp more than its German rival, the BMW R1200GS. MCN has released the spy images of the KTM Adventure which were clicked in Canary Islands when being tested.

The bike being tested is very similar to the 990 Adventure (the one posted towards the beginning of this write – up) taking a look at its design cues. The prototype seems to be a hand built one which is very basic and hence would atleast take a couple of years or a few months less than that to come alive in the market.

When being asked about this prototype, KTM Product Manager, Mr. Jorg Schuller said, “The bike in the pictures is one of the prototypes KTM is currently developing. As you know, our development centre is working intensively on several projects, and the new Adventure is one of these. It is planned to introduce two new Adventure models onto the market in 2013.”

However one can be rest assured that this models will not be the one for India.

I don't remember waiting for such a long time for the launch of any bike like what's happening with the Pulsar series. The date is finally revealed for the launch and it is 30^th of this month (January). Wait with your fingers crossed as I update you with the live happening right from Mumbai from the launch spot.

The venue for the launch is Hotel ITC Grand Central in Mumbai. I'm very sure that the expectations for the next generation Pulsars keep rising as time pass by. We don't have any clue as such on what are the engine variants with which they'll be launching this whole new breed of bike.It's been 10 successful years for Bajaj started dealing with the Pulsar brand of Motorcycles. It in fact became a kinds youth icon in India, which is the reason for its success in the Indian market. Overwhelmed by the success here, Bajaj also started exporting the Pulsar series to various other markets which include Indonesia and Singapore to name a few and the best part of the story is that they are equally success out there as well

Now, what make the expectations for the next generation Pulsars grow so high? This time it's not a typical facelift or an upgrade which Indian bikes are used to. According to what Mr. Bajaj said in an interview, the next generation Pulsar is gonna be based on a whole new [platform and the technologies incorporated will be the best in class. Also, there are rumours and speculations that these Pulsars will make use of the technology and might also be based on the KTM platform. True? No? Let's wait to see the reality.

Yamaha Fazer Review & Road Test

All across the globe, Street bikes has got its own fan base and so has the sport bikes for itself. Yamaha holds a pre – dominant position when it comes to both these kinda bikes. Think of street bikes and FZ series will be the first one to strike the gong in your mind. For the sport-bike category, it has to be the inevitable YZF – R15. (What else can one think of other than this?)

But, ever wondered how will a street bike look if it bears a fairing which is basically derived from that of a sport-bike? It'll be resembling the Indian bike which talks about the 'Touring Spirit'. Put your collars up for a while if you guessed it right. It has to be the Yamaha Fazer.

The bike sees no change across its entire body and heart (the engine) which is all inherited from the FZ-16 which became a massive hit in the sub – continent by attracting great fans towards the company. Also, the Fazer marks the beginning of a whole new segment by targeting specifically the long distance tourers.

First Impression

Though, the Fazer doesn't boast of a monstrous look unlike most other European bikes, you need to look at it with an artistic touch to get a glimpse of its macho starring monstrous looks. Our Photographer Sharat tried too hard to get the click in the most appealing angle (as a result of which he made me divert the traffic for him for about 15 min or so!). Finally after puff and pants, I should say that he has indeed been successful to an extent in his attempt. Historic attempt, Oh well that's just way too much!

The headlamp fairing is what catches your attention on the first sight when taking a look from the front angle. The dual lamp small fairing is the cut down version of the R15's fairing and matches just perfectly in the given space. For a true macho and an aggressive look, twin lights will always assist in getting the effect accomplished ad the Fazer is a live example for it. Actually, I'm the right guy to comment about the Fazer's looks. You know why? I've never been personally impressed so much by the FZ-16 or the FZ-S for that matter. And that's because I always have a greater affinity and bonding towards sport-bikes. But, I found the Fazer very appealing with a mutual composition of both these looks.

The small fairing is cut at the right place just ahead f the fuel tank's projection which doesn't affect the position of your leg in any matter. I really like this designing. The graphics are also bare minimal and are cool enough to ideally match the bike's looks. The wind protector above the fort fairing is another style quotient here. Though, it is undersized it does its work brilliantly.

Bangalore Wheels, the Yamaha dealer in Bangalore had offered us the Limited Edition Midnight Black series for our review. This is a masterpiece from the company where aesthetics meets the touring spirit perfectly. As you can see, the rims are matte gold in color with the graphics too in the same color. Cool enough to attract any passer – by in the signal or along heavy traffic.

What is Fazer worth of?

Yamaha India website bring the adage of Fazer to display right out there. It states

This is more than enough to be on familiar terms with what category does the Fazer actually fit itself into ideally.

Engine

Let's first discuss about the heart of the Fazer, which is nothing but its engine. Its 153cc engine is derived from its sibling FZ-16 without undergoing any tuning for any sort of performance. As with the case of all Yamaha engines, the Fazer also is a zero vibration bike and possesses no engine vibes.

So, no worries on that aspect. The engine doesn't get exhausted fast with puffs and pants when you rev her up as much as you can. The engine is more frugal and you get to understand it right in the first ride (if you really notice it keenly). The 153cc ' -cooled' engine is ideal along all kinda roads and makes the bike an efficient handler. The detailed spec list along with that of engine details will be posted towards the end of this post.

Handing

Handling of the Yamaha Fazer has nothing much to talk about. She is not at all a bike meant to be used in a track and hence if you expect such a kind of decent performance, she would greatly be pacified in satisfying you. The bike handles extremely well in the power band of around 5500 to 6500 rpm. This band will be able to glide the bike in a speed of around 90 kmph without any strain to the engine. No vibes, no hard pulling nor no roughness. Probably, that's what the bike is designed for. This is what a guy taking this bike for a long trip would in turn expect from a bike like the Fazer.

Rev it up a little more and the engine starts expressing its unhappiness. But, you gotta be happy that it doesn't express it in the form of engine vibes. That's the best part about the Fazer. Absolutely no vibes. But, you need to rev her up so damn hard and hold it for a long time and that's when you'll find her touching a max speed of 119 kmph which is the max. speed she is able to attain. I tried touching 120 but in vain. But, still this is a decent figure for a 150 cc touring bike and one has to be happy and is forced to stay satisfied with it.

Riding Impression

As I took this bike for a ride along the NICE road on the outskirts of Bangalore, I was able to get the feel that she can sustain comfortably for along rides, than compared with the usual and tiresome city rides. On the first note, the handle – bar is pretty wide thereby creating a comfortable riding position and I really found it very useful as we opened her throttle along the open highway. This is something I feel should be a part of all bikes designed for touring purposes.

The mono – shock suspension in the rear does its work brilliantly. As you cruise, this offers an ease of ride which I was able to feel clearly and if you've a pillion on your back, then this would make your ride even more enjoyable. Ride the Fazer in the 3^rd gear and you'll enjoy the way she responds back for your throttle. Every bike will have one gear which is the fun to ride and as mentioned, it is 3^rd for the Fazer.

But, it becomes very clear that this is not the kinda bike that can be used on the tracks owing to its bulkiness, not in terms of weight but in terms of its size.

Seating

The seating position of the Fazer is no different from that of the FZ series. It is comfortable for both highway cruises and for the city commutes, which is where the Fazer stands a class apart. As with the case of other bikes, the seats are not slippery which prevents you from having a comfortable ride.

The split seat concept is not implemented but there is a considerable difference in height between that if the rider and pillion and this is again not too high making the entire concept uncomfy.

However, lean forward of tuck – in position becomes tough in getting used to in the Fazer, there is a fact that this is not the bike of that kinds, which I'm constantly mentioning for your knowledge.

Performance

There is usually a mindset amongst us that tourers will not be able to deliver great performance. But, it depends on the way we're gonna handle her. Agreed that it cannot perform to the greatest but one has to agree that Fazer doesn't underperform when compared with its rivals.

In fact, it is pretty better than many other rivals in the 150cc segment. Apart from that, there's not much to discuss about the bike's performance here. In short, you can expect same kinda performance what you get outta the FZ-16 or the FZ-S.

Headlamps

Here comes the interesting fact about this bike. The main notable difference between the FZ-16 (and the FZ-S for that matter) and the fazer is the twin pod headlamp and its fairing which covers it. Any bike would obviously look great with twin headlamps and the Fazer is not gonna be any exception with this fact. In fact that's what the best part about the Fazer is. But, guess what's the funniest part here? You can't turn on both the lamps together. Yes, you seriously can't do that. That turns out to be a minor flaw. (Or major you call It as).

Yamaha need to upgrade this feature in the Fazers soon. Among the two lamps present, one comes alive when you turn on the low bean switch and the other exclusively for high beams. This concept is unlike the way the headlamps of the R15 work.

I don't understand the concept of keeping one light dummy and the other active. High time for a change in this aspect and let's hope Yamaha hears us and incorporate this change in the next breed of bikes.

Instrument Cluster

Again, not much to discuss as this is inherited from its siblings. It's a fully integrated digital cluster with absolutely no pinch of analog elements surprising us. It has a Fuel-meter, Odometer and the Tachometer combined in an overall package with the Speedo.

You also have the Tripmeter out here. It looks as a great package for a bike like fazer which is targeted for the long tourers.

Brakes

The Fazer comes equipped with disc brakes at the front and the conventional drum brakes for the rear tyre. The front single hydraulic disc does its work brilliantly without a flaw. Brakes in Yamahas have never been an issue worth concern till date. However, it's high time for the Fazer to be fitted with rear discs as well.

Every other bike in this segment competes with discs for both the tyres and this is a point where Fazer lacks. But, as I say this I should also tell you the fact that the drums handle far better than the way its other competitors handle. There are companies (and this is not the apt place to mention the name) from companies where the discs handle worse than the drums. There's no sense of dissatisfaction with the rear brakes. However, it's a suggestion which needs to be heard as we talk about this here and needs to be implemented at the fastest possible time frame.

About The Midnight Special

Let's also have a few words here mentioned here about the 'Midnight Special' edition of Fazer which is basically a limited edition one. This deserves a special place as you can't get this bike now even if you love it to the core of your heart. There were only 1000 bikes produced as part of this limited edition series and Yamaha stuck on to the figure seriously. What makes this bike unique from the others is the pinch if matte gold color which you find here and there. For instance, the entire graphics in this bike is golden color based which makes it really stand apart, not from its competitors from other brand but from its own color schemes.

As you can see in the pics, both the alloy wheels are matte gold powder coated without much fanfare. That is something which attracted me towards this bike. This color scheme is available not only for the Fazer, but also for the FZ-16 and the FZ-S range of bikes. The toolbox cover also has the term 'Midnight Special' written on it with an attractive macho font. Then you've a small metal strip in the fuel tank where the unique number of your bike is engraved. This makes the bike more special and admirable irrespective of how many ever years you keep this bike for yourself.

The final admiration is the autograph of India's most admired biker and Bollywood star – John Abraham on the headlamp fairing. Hardcore fans of JA would love possessing one of this limited edition bikes.

Tyres

If it's any bike in the FZ series, then there has to be a paragraph exclusively dedicated for the tyres of these bikes. The rear tyre is the highlight for this mean bike. The dimension of the rear tyre is '140/60-R17' which makes it one of the widest tyres offered on an Indian bike.

The tyres are tubeless which came in handy for us as we met with a punctured rear tyre along 30 kms off the city limit. The tubeless tyres enabled us to reach till the puncture-wallah ad then get it done. For a bike like Fazer which is designed to cater the needs of tourers, tyres like this would indeed be a boon at times of emergency. Excellent road – grip is what these set of tyres offer and the confidence level within you goes way too to the fore when you've such implausible tyres on your bike. The dimension of the front tyre is 100/80-17 which again does its job executed perfectly without a flaw.

Miscellaneous

There are few other points also to be mentioned here. This is one of the few bikes n the 150cc category which still comes with a kick – starter. Absence of this option has become a hot topic of discussion these days in BikeAdvice forum. For such guys who has got an obsession towards kick – start, this is one of the best option you've here in the market.

Then the next point is that here are absolutely no LEDs coming anywhere in the picture. Neither the turn indicators nor the tail lamps are installed with LED lamps.

To mention a word about the gearbox, it is a five speed one which is truly crisp with smooth levers which enables better ride quality and also enhances the same to a greater extent.

The grab- rail is indeed one of the coolest looking in the market. Though, it's been quite some time we've this in our market, it still looks spanking new which is the prime plus for this bike

Last but not the least, the exhaust talks a tone about the bikes looks. The small yet bulky exhaust has become the identity for this entire series of bikes. The note arising here is sharp and enjoyable. Acts as a style quotient as well, apart from differentiating itself in the battle without losing out itself on the long run.

Fuel Efficiency

For a 153cc bike like the Yamaha Fazer, all that you can expect is a decent figure of 40 – 44 kmpl practically as the Fuel Efficiency. With a heavy rise in city traffic these days, the Fuel Efficiency naturally tends to see a dip.

Color schemes

Yamaha Fazer is available in four color schemes as of now. The schemes being Competition White, Black Cyber Green, Lava Red and the list would tend to become incomplete without mentioning Midnight Black. The bulky body of the Fazer is capable to bear all these paintjobs on her and is able to carry them well. None of the colors really looks odd on the Fazer. Note that Midnight Special scheme is not mentioned in the list.

Price

Coming to 'P' factor, the Fazer is made to bear a price tag of INR 74,500 which is the Ex- Showroom price in the city of Delhi. This is marginally expensive for a 150 cc bike. However, taking into consideration the big bike feel which it offers, the amount is worth investing upon.

Conclusion

It is indeed nice to see bikes like Fazer, which are designed to satisfy the inner self of true bikers who believe in the fact that bikes are for long rides. On an overall package, if you want one bike which should be made use of across all kinda lanes, be it city roads or open highways, this is the bike you need to go for . One thing that neds to be assured here is that you certainly get value for the bucks spent here though it is commented to be priced high by many riders.

I've tried my max to cover almost everything about this bike and I assume that I've been quite successful in my attempt as well. All that I expect is that my readers should sit back and enjoy the review.

Yamaha has been known for its performance bikes across the globe and in India they are the only name which strikes the mind if you want a high performing bike. But, it tried its hands on a powerful commuter bike for the Indian market with its SZ series of bikes.

Yamaha has given a minor upgrade to the existing line up of SZ series. The SZ – R & SZ – X has been launched with new colour schemes and there is also an additional feature added. Guess what? Kick start feature has been added.The SZ – X is now available in three colour schemes which are Red, Black and Silver. The last colour mentioned here is really impressive and looks cool on this bike. Talking about the SZ – R, it is again the same three colours here as well. However for the SZ – R, the air scoops fitted onto the side of the fuel tanks are silver except the silver colour scheme where is gets replaced with a kinda opera gold colour. When it comes to the SZ – X, it adapts single colour schemes all across and boasts of no separate colour for the air scoop.

I had already posted a comprehensive test ride review of SZ-R. It is a decent performing bike and I like the way it really handled.

Bajaj Auto, the country's second largest producer of two – wheelers has decided to maintain its high growth momentum in the sub – continent. In order to keep up the sales figures high for the year 2012 – 2013, the company believes that launching new bikes would be the most ideal solution, taking the present market scenario into consideration.

"We expect this initiative to bring enormous energy into our system. Customers who visit our showrooms will hopefully be impressed with what they see and overall sentiment will be lifted in the process," Mr Rajiv Bajaj, Managing Director, told Business Line in an exclusive interview.In less than a week (30^th of this month), Bajaj will launch the next generation Pulsar series which will be placed to fit in the mid – sports category. This is as part of the celebration for the 10^th year anniversary of Pulsar which has made the company grow leaps and bounds, not only in the Indian market but across several other nations as well.

"I am confident that the new Pulsar will be the most stunning sports bike in the world. It is also my belief that as much as DTS-i took the market by storm, the new technology in the Pulsar will shake up the market this decade," Mr Bajaj said.

Mr. Bajaj had already announced that the next generation Pulsar will be based on a whole new platform and will be an entirely new series of bike by itself. Also, there will be another new product getting added to the company's portfolio by the month of June. This time, there are high chances for it to be the Discover series which will get a massive change – over.

It can also so happen that the same technology and platform on which the new Pulsar would be based on would get transferred to the Discover breed as well. The brand currently has 3 variants, viz 100, 125 and 150cc which are all majorly used as commuters. Discover, as a brand is known for its refined engine and enhanced Fuel – Efficiency.

"Our strategy is to be a bike specialist. We have every reason to believe that 2012-13 will be an exciting period where we can produce something special for customers both here and abroad," Mr Bajaj said.

Bajaj's revenues from foreign markets is a whooping 35 [per cent as of now and will more likely see a rise in the days to some. Africa has already been identified bu Bajaj Auto as the key growth driver, in addition to its operations in Asia, while the KTM association could help Bajaj Auto make inroads into Brazil as part of the bigger Latin America journey.

The business newspaper, Business Line also reported 'The company hopes to wrap up this fiscal with production of over 4.4 million bikes and three-wheelers and the new launches in 2012-13 are expected to give a fillip to the growth tempo.'

The company is also looking up on opening fourth plant but it seems to be in no hurry. The reason for this is the fact that the 3 facilities at Chakan, Waluj and Pantnagar which are presently operating are sufficient for the company in meeting up its present demand.

As an end note, "We have an astute business model with strong front and back-ends. We know that we are a volumes player but this does not have to translate into mediocre profitability. As much as it is common to find high profitability with low volumes, we are striving for fairly high profitability with fairly high volumes," Mr Bajaj said.

If you can rewind and go a few years behind, Bajaj launched exclusive Pro – Biking outlets to sell its high displacement bikes specifically. The launch of Ninjas into the Indian market prompted Bajaj Auto to take this step at that point of time. However, there was a common complaint there that bikes were never offered for test rides and the way customers were handled were also not so great. Now, let's come to the present. The news here is that Bajaj will be soon replacing all its pro – biking showrooms which have been its strength for quite some time in taping the Indian market.

Bajaj launched the first product from KTM – The KTM Duke 200 which is its strategic partner from Austria over which the Indian company holds around a massive 40 per cent share. The entire range of Pro – Biking showrooms will now be branded as KTM stores. I can hear your question about the selling of Ninjas here. Yes, both the models of Ninja – Ninja 250R and the 650R will be put to sale through the KTM store form now on.

The Pro – Biking showrooms came live since the year 2003 and has been actively doing its part of selling the Pulsar 220, Pulsar 200 (which is no more produced) and other bikes for the past 8 years in a row. We will continue to distribute the Ninjas. When we first invested in Pro – biking in 2003, we knew that one day we would need exclusive distribution for the premium market," Mr Rajiv Bajaj, Bajaj Auto’s Managing Director said.

He then added to his statement, "At that time, we had no idea what that brand would be. What Pulsar was 10 years back, KTM is today."

KTM store becomes a necessity for the company to sell more of its products in the future. For instance, there are high chances of Bajaj to launch the Duke 350 in less than a year's time according to the industry speculations.

KTM may also soon sell top-end Bajaj models, such as the Pulsar range, through its outlets in Europe and a few emerging markets. Exports for KTM already started in 2011.

"We’re looking to sell Bajaj models through our dealers – this could happen in about two years. Europe is though not a market for the cheaper models," Mr. Stefan Pierer, the CEO of KTM-Sportmotorcycles AG said.

Bajaj's stake in KTM not only enhances better sales for the company but also allows it to make use of KTM technology for its own products. The next generation pulsar which is due for launch on 30^th of this month will prove this point.

Business Line has quoted, 'KTM plans to make most of its smaller displacement bikes at Bajaj’s Chakan plant, while its bigger bikes will be made at its plant in Austria. With an annual capacity of 30,000 units at Chakan for KTM, two models are being manufactured at present – the Duke 200 and 125.'

KTM makes use of Bajaj's plant in Chakan to manufacture and export its Duke 125 to the European market. Last year (2011), KTM exported 11,000 units to markets like Europe and America from India. This is expected to touch 1.5 lakh units in three years, Mr Pierer said.

In India, the company expects to sell 2,000 units a month and thereby converting India as its biggest market by the year 2013, overtaking the US. Last year, KTM managed to sell over 81,000 units across the globe as part of its international presence.

New Delhi, January 24, 2012: Bajaj Auto Limited and KTM Sportmotorcycle AG today announced the much awaited launch of the KTM brand in India. Known for their legendary racing achievements, KTM is Europe's second largest motorcycle manufacturer and dominates the off-road segment across the world. After posting sales of more than 1.5 million units per quarter in domestic market, Hero Motocorp is now all set to enter into new territories, to expand its global footprint. The company which reported 43% jump in profit for the third quarter of 2011-12, has announced that it will start to export two wheelers in new overseas market in the first of the financial year 2012-13. New markets include South East Asia, Africa and Latin America. It is currently in process of finalizing its partner and business model. The company had earlier planned to start export in the current quarter, however due to strong domestic demand and production constraint; it will now start exporting in the financial year 2012-13.

Mr Anil Dua, senior vice president of marketing and sales at Hero MotoCorp said, "the company has seen about 20% sales growth in exports and is drawing up a road map to expand its base in existing markets like Latin America and South Asia. South East Asia and Africa are also among the markets that Hero MotoCorp plans to tap to grow exports. We are completing our strategy, business model and partners to enter into the new markets. We should be able to start our operations in the next couple of quarters."

The company is also increasing its capacity to 7 million units per year for the financial year 2012-13. Currently it has 6.2 million units installed capacity which it will expand to 7 million units by March 2012. The output will be increased at all of its three plants, Haridwar, Gurgaon and Manesar. For example, it is expanding its Haridwar plant capacity to more than 9,000 units a day from current 8,000 units a day.

The company has already expanded its scooter production capacity to 50,000 units a month from 35,000 units a month. The company sold record 61,17,599 units of two-wheelers in the period January-December 2011, a growth of 19.2% over the calendar year of 2010 when it had sold 51,34,549 two-wheelers.

The company also expects to remain its royalty payment at current level for the fourth quarter. The company has paid royalty of Rs.228 crores for this quarter which is increased from Rs.210 crores it paid in the second quarter, due to yen's appreciation against rupee. The above figure suggests that the cumulative royalty for 2011-12 will be around Rs.846 crores (228+228+210+180) which is higher than expected amount of Rs.685 crores per year. The company signed the licensing pact worth ¥45,000 million (about Rs.2,400 crore) in April last year which is payable in 14 quarters.

Commenting on royalty Anil Dua added "We expect the royalty payment for the March quarter (Q4) to be lower than last quarter, as we expect the rupee to appreciate from the current levels… Rs.53-54 (versus dollar) is not stable." He added that the company is in the process of building its research and development (R&D) capabilities, but it won’t happen overnight."

The company as also hired about 255 engineers for building research and development facility and it expects to develop its own motorcycle by 2015. It seems that the company is on course for achieving sales of 10 million units a year by 2015 something which its earlier joint venture partner Honda aiming to do by 2020.

We had just posted a couple of days back, the way Munjals led Hero MotoCorp had performed in the last quarter. The company managed to produce fantastic sales figures and is been consistently growing leaps and bounds in the sub – continent.

Off late, the depreciation of INR in the global market is more likely to lead to around 24 per cent increase in Hero MotoCorp’s royalty payments to its erstwhile partner Honda. This figure is pretty high than what HMC expected at the start of the year 2011 – 12.

Mr Ravi Sud, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) said at an investor call, 'However, the rupee value of yen denominated payments could drop from the next fiscal on expectations of an appreciation of the rupee.'

"We expect the royalty payment for the March quarter (Q4) to be lower than last quarter, as we expect the rupee to appreciate from the current levels… Rs 53-54 (versus dollar) is not stable," he said.

In the third quarter which got ended by December 31 last year, the world's largest two – wheeler manufacturer paid a whooping sum of INR 228 crore to the Japanese firm under a technology licensing pact that stretches till June of 2014.

Hero MotoCorp also expects the fourth quarter payment to also remain at the same level or lower than the third quarter. In the first and second quarters of the current fiscal, the company had paid a sum of INR 180 crore and INR 210 crore respectively.

It is also to be mentioned that the cumulative royalty for the year 2011 – 12 is pretty higher than what it had expected when it actually signed the licensing pact worth ¥45,000 million (about Rs 2,400 crore)with Honda in the month of April last year.The amount was payable over a period of 14 quarters.

"The royalties will be paid in annual instalments to Honda … Our estimate is that it will increase to Rs 670-680 crore a year till 2014," Mr Sud had said in April last year.

However, the cumulative royalty for 2011-12 is now likely to be around Rs 846 crore (if Q4 royalty is also at Rs 228 crore). Despite higher royalty amoubts paid to Honda, Hero MotoCorp’s profits in the December quarter rose by 43 per cent to a record of INR 613 crore. The company also managed to sell the highest – ever number of two wheelers at a figure of 15.89 lakh units.

Besides being a successful company in India, HMC also has serious plans of foraying foreign markets in order to increase its profit. The company plans to enter new overseas markets somewhere by the first half of 2012 – 13, as it finalises its partner and business model with which it would operate in its new markets. It had earlier planned to expand exports in the current quarter.

"We are completing our strategy, business model and partners to enter into the new markets. We should be able to start our operations in the next couple of quarters," Mr Anil Dua.

At the same time as HMC concentrates on tapping the potential in untapped markets, it is also trying to increase its output capacity in the domestic market.

The output across its three plants at Haridwar, Gurgaon and Manesar is being increased to seven million units by March, from a present capacity of 6.2 million units.

As part of its expansion plans, the company has also increased its workforce by hiring another 255 engineers at its R&D centre, and hopes to develop its own bike by the year 2015.

So guys, wait till 2015 to see a whole new bike concept from HMC which will be developed by itself and now by depending on its ex – counterpart. So, here goes the scoop. Will HMC showcase the new concept bike in the Delhi Auto Expo 2014? Answers please!

Suzuki GSR 750 Preview

We already have gone through a showcase of one more street warrior during coverage of Autoexpo 2012. It's a 750 cc macho machine from Japanese manufacturer SUZUKI.

GSR 750 was launched by the SUZUKI during mid of 2011 for the global market. Suzuki is mostly known for marvellous technologies used in GSX-R and Hayabusa. Few of technologies from GSX are now incorporated in new GSR 750 for better street performance. Let us have a brief journey through some changes those have included on new GSR.

Engine

Refined 750 cc engine used in GSR uses twin throttle valve for better charging efficiency and produces more power like GSX-R. Suzuki has now used exhaust tuning system in GSR which works with servo operated butter fly valve. This system helps to maintain scavenging efficiency of the engine in almost all operating conditions. Better scavenging as well as breathing efficiency improves sudden braking and acceleration, proving this bike perfect for city roads.

Suspensions

Front suspensions have been changed to inverted type telescopic as needed by high performance bikes. Rear mono-cross now comes with progressive linkage instead of simple mono-cross. This progressive linkage helps to increase damping ratio by absorbing small disturbances. It is important to mention here that the rear suspension is now 7 times adjustable which also helps to adjust driver's seat height.

Frame

Frame has become much light weight with the help of advance integrative design instead of using single casted frame. Integrated design uses different materials with different properties at different sections to optimize the frame as and where required. The frame of GSR is basically a combination of compact tubular girders and twin spar type frame.

Aesthetics

Majority changes have been performed in aesthetics of GSR to provide new-edge glance. This change starts from the front fender which is a carefully moulded with striking vent shapes.

Tank shape in now much more muscular with distinctive textured side panels. Company's emblem is now located at radiator side panels assisted with aggressive front bodywork.

Head light is now much more refined and comes with dazzling and idiosyncratic shape. Head light shell is also provided with vented side panels just like front fender. It also uses integrated dual position lights with decorative blue lenses for astounding looks in gloomy surrounding.

Four exhaust pipes are now kept open to provide elegant look. Exhaust opening is now drawn by side of rear wheel which was located under the pillion seat. Triangle shaped exhaust muffler has been directly imitated from Hayabusa, looks stunning from the rear. Single straight seat is now replaced by outlined split seats in new GSR. Seats are also flanked with stylish frame side covers. Rear side panels are also made tricky and rear tail has become sharper towards the end. There are three colour options available in this street fighter: Glass sparkle black – GSR750 – YVB, Glass sparkle black/ Pearl mira red – GSR750 – JSP, Pearl glacier white – GSR750 –YWW.

Right besides the Honda's stall, TVS's was one stall which was full of glitz and gamour. Though they did not officially launch any product as such but had many interesting bits to lure people to their show, obviously apart from girls!

Apart from their concept scooter Qube and off roader TVS RTR250fx which we have already reported, TVS had a lot of other stuff on display.

1) TVS displayed the 150cc step-thru Tormax

Launched in Indonesia sometime back, Tormax 150 has a lot of technical advancements going in its favor. For one, it is a 3 valve liquid cooled 150cc engine which produces 13.2 PS of max power @ 8000 rpm. The other is its monoshock suspension.

It weighs only 112 kgs. This makes me wonder, why ain't the 3 valve, liquid cooling and mono-suspension has not made to any of TVS bikes in India.

This step-thru in Black-yellow combo was showcased by TVS. I don't feel it would make it into a market which is not known for step thrus, however the technology I am sure would make it to TVS bikes very soon.

2) TVS displayed the Automatic Transmission Technology

TVS had kept the engine which deploys the new 'TVS Automatic Transmission' on display. TVS has indigenously developed this tech and it employs Automatic Transmission in place of the conventional Continuously Variable Transmission Technology known as CVT.

According to TVS this technology will enhance fuel efficiency by 20 percent. It allows change of gears effortlessly through electronic control. It also comes with an innovative ECU (Electronic Control Unit) which helps in enhancing the performance and fuel efficiency of the engine. TVS has high plans of applying this innovative technology on many forthcoming products.

3) TVS displays refreshed Star City

TVS had also on display a refreshed Star City which had some snazzy graphics running all around the body of the bike. In a combo of black, white & green the bike did look fresh.

4) TVS displays 125cc Radeon 125DX

Also on display was an unknown (at least to me) motorcycle called as Radeon 125DX. By the badging it looked like a 125cc motorcycle. Ironically, it looks exactly the same as the new Jive in its new refreshing colors with a changed badge. I don't know if TVS wants to gauge public response and launch this in India.

5) TVS Wego in metallic finish

TVS also displayed a metallic finished spanking new orangish red colored unisex scooter Wego.

6) Scooty Streak in black color

The 90cc Scooty Streak had a black-green color combo on display

7) Scooty Pep+ in new color

The predominantly female oriented scooter Scooty Pep+ had a new color combo on display. The scooter in white with red graphics was on display. There was also a tinge of silver all across the scooter.

Apart from these, their regular models like the TVS Sport ES, Apache RTR160 HyperEdge yellow, Apache RTR180 in matt grey and Apache RTR 180 ABS in white were also showcased. Incidentally, TVS did not have on display their clutchless wonder Jive and the controversial 125cc Flame.

Hero Motocorp Q3 Profits Rise By 43%

I know so many people who were very sure that the Hero group will not be able to sustain the momentum in which they were doing business in the Indian market following the split with the Honda group.

Hero MotoCorp, world's largest two – wheeler manufacturing company has posted its highest ever profits for a quarter with a growth rate of 43 per cent, despite the fact that its turnover (INR 6,031 crore) touched the highest in this period of 3 months.

The Net sales for the company in this period went up by 17 per cent, as two-wheeler sales for the three month period peaked at 15.89 lakh units. HMC has managed to sell a little over half a million units every month in this quarter.

"We are well in line to meet our guidance for over six million unit sales in the fiscal 2012," Mr Pawan Munjal, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer, Hero MotoCorp said.

The two-wheeler maker’s EBITDA margin in the third quarter stood 15.6 per cent, though raw material costs were up 19 per cent to Rs 4,453 crore.

"In FY12, the industry has been facing constraints of rising fuel prices, high interest rates and a sharp rupee depreciation, leading to increased input costs impacting the margin.

He then added, "We have also seen a softening in commodity prices of late, which has, however, been offset by the rupee depreciation. While we expect market demand for two-wheelers to remain stable, a lot will depend on the overall economic and political scenario, going forward."

Business Line has recently reported that 'the profits could have been even higher, if not for about Rs 180 crore royalty reportedly paid to erstwhile Japanese partner Honda in the quarter. This is part of the Rs 2,400-crore royalty payable till June 2014 under a licensing agreement.'

Royalties were expected by the company's side to go up, with the yen appreciating by as much as 20 per cent during this period. Hero MotoCorp plans to launch three new models in the next few months — the 110cc Passion X Pro, a 110cc scooter, Maestro, and a 125cc bike, Ignitor. However, the company displayed all these models in the Delhi Auto Expo 2012.

Hero MotoCorp has also decided to strengthen its Research And Development (R&D) facilities in order to take the company to the next level and to sustain its position in the Indian market on the long run. The company is also concentrating a lot on the Hybrid technology, which has got a great potential out here. Hero Leap which was showcased in the Auto Expo is another example for the company's efforts of thinking big. The company has also been in discussion with international design houses and technology suppliers for collaboration to develop new models.

Hero MotoCorp: The world's no. 1 two wheeler company has posted growth of 7.82% in the month of December 2011 compared to December 2010. The company has sold 5,40,276 units of two wheeler in the month of December 2011 compared to 5,01,111 units of two wheeler sold in the month of December 2010. This is by far company's highest ever sales for December till the date. On the month on month basis the sales is up by 0.65%. The company sold 5,36,772 units in the month of November 2011. Hero Honda Pleasure is continuously crossing 35,000 units a month mark. The company has reported sales of 46,63,238 units for the period of April to December 2011 up by 18.12% compared to 39,47,983 units during the same period last year. The company sold record 6,117,599 units of two-wheelers in the period January-December 2011, a growth of 19.2% over the calendar year of 2010 when it had sold 5,134,549 two-wheelers.

Hero MotoCorp Senior Vice President (Marketing and Sales), Mr Anil Dua, commented "The year 2011 has been extremely positive and eventful for the company. We donned a new brand identity this year and introduced the country's first on-road, off-road bike Impulse, our first model to be launched under the new Hero brand name. Throughout the year, our sales performance has made consistent progress. We reached new milestones early this year with record sales and managed to keep it in excess of half a million units per month. Going forward, we intend to further consolidate our leadership position with new launches combined with focused communication and network expansion."

The first nine months figure suggest that the company will easily achieve its 6 million units target. The company has launched three new products in Auto Expo 2012, Passion Xpro, Maestro & Ignitor under its new brand identity Hero. It also showcased its first hybrid concept scooter LEAP. The company is also looking for establishing fourth plant which will become operational by second half of financial year 2012-13. Beside this the company is looking to expand its present capacity of 6.15 million units to 7.0 million units.

Bajaj Auto

Country's second largest two wheeler maker, Bajaj Auto has reported growth of 8.22% in the month of December 2011. The company has sold 2,63,699 units of motorcycle in the month of December 2011 compared to 2,43,675 units in the month of December 2010. This is by far company's highest ever monthly sales for December month in company's history. The company exported 1,19,708 units in the month of December 2011 up by 25.50% compared to 95,388 units in the month of December 2010.

On the month on month basis sales is down by 20.56%. The company sold 3,31,967 units in the month of November 2011. The company's total sales stood at 3,05,690 units in the month of December 2011 up by 10.44% compared to 2,76,803 units in the month of December 2010. The company has sold 29,37,157 units of two wheeler during April to December 2011 period up by 15.17% compared to 25,50,372 units sold during the same period last year. Combined sales of brand Pulsar have crossed 5 million marks which is remarkable for Bajaj Auto.

The December month sales figure suggested that the company has flat sales for domestic market. There is also concern that the company will not achieve its 4.6 million unit target which was revised to 4.5 million units and now further revised to 4.4 million units. The company may achieve 20% growth in value terms but it would not achieve the same in volume front. The company still bullish for the year 2012 as its' going to launch three new motorcycle, starting with Duke 200 on 24^th January.

TVS Motors

TVS Motors has posted de growth of 0.27% in the month of December 2011. The company has sold 1,67,905 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 1,68,359 units sold in the month of December 2010. Total sales stood at 1,70,428 units in the month of December 2011 down by 0.79% compared to 1,71,790 units sold in the same period last year. On the month on basis the company's sales is down by 2.85%. The company sold 1,72,829 units of two wheeler in the month of November 2011.

Domestic sales stood at 1,46,747 units in the month of December 2011 down by 1.75% compared to 1,49,357 units sold in the month of December 2010. Export stood at 21,158 units in the month of December 2011 up by 11.35% compared to 19,002 units sold in December 2010. The company sold 44,804 units of scooter in the month of December 2011 up by 7.18% compared to 41,804 units of scooter sold in the month of December 2010. Motorcycle sales stood at 56,662 units in the month of September 2011 down by 7.74% compared to 61,414 units sold in the month of December 2010. Moped sales stood at 66,439 units in the month of December 2011. The company has sold 16,37,993 units during April 2011 to December 2011 period up by 10.29% compared to 14,85,102 units in the same period last year.

"As a result of lower overall economic growth, high inflation, increased fuel prices and interest rates, we expect some moderation in the growth of two wheelers over the next three to six months. Hence we did not want to increase trade stocks. Consequently billing for the month is lower than our initial indication,” TVS Motor said in a statement.

TVS Motors motorcycle sale is stagnating now. The company is pushing well on moped front. The company is also bullish on export front and exploring new opportunities to expand its export market. The company has set goal of selling 2.4 million units in this financial year which it will miss considering only 3 months left to achieve the same.

HMSI

India's largest scooter manufacturing company Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Ltd reported sales growth of 36.34% in the month of December 2011. The company reported sales of 1,91,854 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 1,40,719 units in the December 2010. On month on month basis the company's sales is down by 3.68%. The company sold 1,99,154 units in the month of November 2011.

Motorcycle sale is up by 24.97% in the month of December 2011. The company sold 78,721 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 62,991 units in the month of December 2010. On the other hand Scooter sale is up by whopping 45.20%. The company sold 1,12,863 units of scooter in the month of December 2011 compared to 77,728 units in the month of December 2010. The company has sold 14,92,168 units during the April 2011 to December 2011 period up by 20.87% compared to 12,34,517 units sold in the same period last year.

HMSI is now gained number three position continuously for second month. As expected sales is increasing on the month on month basis now. Scooter number for HMSI has grown at the rate of 40-70% from couple of months which suggests continuous capacity expansion. The higher growth rate is also attributed to continuous strong performance in scooter segment. The company has started building its third plant in Narsapur Industrial area, 52 Km away from Banglore, Karnatak to expand it's capacity to 4 million units by mid 2013. The company has planned 7 new products for India in 2012. The company unveiled its mass motorcycle Dream Yuga at Auto Expo 2012.

Yamaha India

Yamaha India has reported sales growth of 29.09% in the month of December 2011 compared to December 2010. Total sales stood at 44,976 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 34,839 units last year in the same period. Month on month basis the sales is up by 14.85%. The company sold 39,162 units in the November 2011. Domestic sales stood at 33,290 units in the month of December 2011 up by 24.88% compared to 26,657 units in the month of December 2010. Export stood at 11,686 units in the month of December 2011 up by 41.27% compared to 8,272 units in the month of December 2010. During April to December 2011 the company sold 3,62,410 units up by 31.56% compared to 2,74,689 units sold in the same period last year. For, the calendar year 2011 the company sol 4,60,815 units up by 31.93% compare to 3,50,274 units sold in the year 2010.

Commenting on the results, Mr. Jun Nakata, Director-Sales & Marketing, India Yamaha Motor Pvt. Ltd., said, "We are very happy with the consistent sales growth that we've been witnessing this year. The new YZF-R15 Version 2.0 along with FZ & SZ series is driving our sales in both domestic and export markets. We plan to reach out to customers in tier II & tier III cities and are expanding our sales & service network in these regions. Our efforts towards enhancing our relationship with our esteemed customers through various initiatives like the Yamaha Safe Riding Science, R15 One Make Race Championships and the Sales & Service camps have also been very fruitful

The company has recently launched version 2.0 of its flagship motorcycle YZF-R15. The company is aiming to sell 5,00,000 units in this financial year with 3,50,000 units of domestic sales and 1,50,000 units of export. The company is also planning to launch scooter in this financial year. The company is also expanding its capacity to 10 lakh units in anticipation of better demand in upcoming years. The company also unveiled its scooter concept Ray at Auto Expo 2012.

Suzuki Motorcycles

Suzuki Motorcycle India did not report the figures for December 2011 month. The company sold 25,837 units last year in December 2010. The company sold 1,97,433 units last year during the period of April to December 2010. Here is the updated numbers for October and November month.

November 2011: Suzuki Motorcycle India reported growth of 23.11% in the month of November 2011 compared to November 2010. The company's total sales stood at 31,332 units in the month of November 2011 compared to 25,450 units in the month of November 2010. On month on month basis company's sales is down by 171.77%. The company sold 11,529 units in the month of October 2011. The company sold 2,10,898 units during the period of April to November 2011 up by 22.90% compared to 1,71,596 units sold in the same period during the last year.

October 2011: Suzuki Motorcycle reported de growth of 54.68% for the month of October 2011 due to ongoing strike at company's plant. The company sold 11,529 units for the month of October 2011 compared to 25,439 units sold in the month of October 2011. On month on month basis company's sales is down by 60.37%. The company sold 29,094 units in the month of September 2011. The company sold 1,79,566 units in during the period of April to October 2011 up by 22.86% compared to 1,46,157 units sold in the same period during the last year.

Mahindra Two wheelers

Two wheeler company Mahindra two wheeler reported de growth of 58.33% in the month of December 2011 compared to December 2010. Total sales stood at 6,231 units in the month of December 2011 compared to 14,971 units in the month of December 2010. Month on Month basis the company's sales is down by 22.64%. The company sold 6,231 units last month. During the April to December 2011 period the company reported sales of 106,499 units down by 13.32% compared to sales of 1,22,859 units in the same month last year.

The company has reported massive de growth this month also in spite of dealer base expansion and promotional activities. This HMSI is clear indication that customers are moving from brand Mahindra. Moreover market leader has increased Activa production which is also taking some unit sales of Mahindra two wheelers. Going forward we will not see good growth figure if situation remains like this. The company is now looking to re launch its motorcycle Stallio for volume growth.

Summary

The Indian two wheeler industry's growth finally started showing slow down in the month of December after fantastic November month sales. The December 2011 month has seen sales of more than 1.23 million units up by 9.70% compared to 1.13 million units sold in December 2010. The period April 2011 to December 2011 has witnessed growth of 16.52% over the same period last year. More than 11.43 million units of two wheelers sold during the period of April 2011 to December 2011 compared to 9.81 million units in the same period last year.

Hero Moto Corp the market leader is continuously posting double digit growth with robust sales each month. It has done 4.66 million units sales in the current financial year. Bajaj Auto the second largest manufacturer of two wheelers has sold over 2.93 million units in the current financial year.

TVS Motors has sold more than 1.64 million units whereas HMSI sales stood at 1.49 million units during April 2011 to December 2011 period. Yamaha India, Suzuki Motorcycle and Mahindra two wheelers sold 0.36 million, 0.25 million and 0.11 million units respectively during the period of April 2011 to December 2011. It seems that the industry may grow at double digit but the growth rate will be around 10-12% for the rest of the financial year.

Bajaj Auto, India’s second largest motorcycle manufacturer posted a 19 per cent rise in its third quarter net profit. The company has reported a net profit of INR 795 crores for the third quarter which ended in the month of December 2011, compared with INR 667 crores which was the net profit attained by Bajaj Auto a year ago.

The Net sales of the company rose to INR 4840 cr from INR 3980 cr year ago.

“We are quite optimistic on the stock. The company has done very well even in tough market conditions during 2011,” said Mr. G Chokkalingam, Executive Director & Chief Investment Officer, Centrum Wealth Management.

“Going forward, we firmly believe that the stock will do well and the sector as a whole would benefit from expected interest rate reversal,” added Mr. Chokkalingam.

Economic Times has compiled analyst views on Bajaj Auto and two-wheeler sector as a whole:

Spark Capital Advisors

Average realization growth of 3.9% QoQ has been largely driven by higher export realizations. Export realizations increased by 9.9% QoQ due to favorable currency movement.

However, domestic average realization growth was flat at 0.65% with no product mix benefit on a sequential basis. In the ensuing quarters, we believe exports will continue to outgrow domestic business.

At CMP of Rs.1,462 the stock trades at 12.2x FY13E EPS. We currently have an Add-Outperform rating on the stock

Microsec Capital Ltd

Bajaj Auto’s net sales increased by 20% to Rs 4840 crore YoY and decreased by 4% QoQ while its adjusted PAT increased by 28% YoY and 4% QoQ to Rs854 crore.

At the CMP of Rs1460, the stock discounts its FY12E EPS of INR110.5 by 13.2x.

Technical View: Ranajit Kumar Saha, Sr. Manager- Technical Research, Microsec Capital Ltd

Bajaj Auto has been consolidating in the range of 1400 and 1500 since last fifteen days. The short term crucial resistance of the stock is at 1503 (near 200 DMA). If it breaks 1400, it may further go down to 1350. For the stock to turn positive, it first needs to consolidate above 1503.

Marwadi Shares & Finance

Marwadi Shares & Finance is of the view that Bajaj Auto’s earnings are above expectations and the company has benefited from rupee depreciation.

The company has clearly benefited from rupee depreciation on exports revenue, which has offset the slowdown in the domestic side and that in our view increases EBITDA margins by 100-125bps.

We all know that brakes are very vital components of any bike. The properties, characteristics and behavior of brakes do not always remain the same. These are influenced by temperature, operating habits, operating durations and effects of interconnected parts.

Just like clutch (you can read my article on clutch awareness here), we mostly get agree to replace our brake liners on just one note of vehicle inspector at service station. Many of the problems related to brakes can be resolved by adjustment or repairing of one or other component. Let us have some idea about common problem arise in brake system, their possible causes and remedies.

Brake Fade

Incidents in which the brakes fail to hold on the wheels on prolonged application is known as brake fade. The friction behaviour of the brake changes due to temperature and deteriorates with an increase in temperature caused on account of prolonged use.

Possible Causes and Remedies

Brake fade is caused due to repeated severe application of brakes which causes expansions of brake drum, or loss of frictional ability of brake lining, or both. If so, reduce speed/ load and use lower gears. The brake fade vanishes and the brake effectiveness is restored as soon as the brake lining cools down. Brake fluid may have deteriorated in this case. The same could be flushed out and fresh fluid of correct specifications required to be filled in. Poor contact between brake lining and the drum can also cause brake fade. In this case, the shoes may be ground to correct radius and/or adjusted. Many of us are in the habit of riding the brake pedal, which causes the brakes to drag and thus became excessively hot, leading to brake fade. The driver should not keep his foot on the brake pedal or should not hold the brake lever pressed unless specifically required.

Brake Binding

This is a condition in which the brake gets a tendency of binding the liner to the brake drum and remains in applied state without pressing the brake lever. It is also known as brake dragging.

Possible Causes and Remedies

One of the key reasons of brake binding is defective springs. The brake shoe retracting springs or the pedal return spring may be weak or broken, which should be replaced immediately. Another reason includes jammed brake shoes over the anchor pins. Brake binding can be eliminated by lubricating this anchor pin. In the case of disc brake, the fluid level in the reservoir might be kept excessive which should be rectified to remove brake binding.

Brake Overheating

The overheating of the brakes is most likely due to the same reasons as for brakes binding. Overheating tends to decrease the friction properties and increases binding.

Possible Causes and Remedies

Apart from above said reasons, they may occur also after prolonged use of brakes while descending a slope. In case of disc brakes apart from the above, the piston in the calliper may be seized. As remedy of this, the calliper has to be rebored and the piston should be replaced.

Brake Judder

It is an experience in which a ringing noise radiates from the brakes.

Possible Causes and Remedies

Brake judder may be either due to wrong brake adjustment, which may be corrected, or due to the brake lining rivets being loose, in which case the lining has to be attached again with new rivets. In most cases, the lining also needs to be replaced.

Grabbing Brakes

It is a state in which the brakes are either seized or have a propensity towards seize.

Possible Causes and Remedies

In the case of drum brakes, very usual reason for grabbing is greasy linings. Sometimes worker forgets to clean the liners before assembling which leads to grabbing after some use. Brake grabbing could be reason of wrong adjustment of shoes. Scoured brake drum also causes grabbing of brakes. The same can be eliminated by grounding the drum within limits. It is also possible that dirt or dust may have entered the brake shoe assembly. It should be cleaned to remove the brake grabbing. A very unusual reason of grabbing is interchanged shoes. Primary and secondary shoes may have been reversed by mistake. Grabbing disappears if shoes are reinstalled correctly.

Excessive Loss of Brake Fluid

As name suggests, it is related with oil leakage form disc brake system. This leakage could be possible from joints, benzo bolts, calliper side, plunger assembly, or reservoir. Brake oil leakage reduces braking effectiveness and includes high maintenance cost if remains uncontrolled.

Possible Causes and Remedies

Major leakages happen at reservoir and calliper, which can be inspected and repaired or replaced as necessary. Another frequent reason of brake fluid loss is loose connections at various joints. Connecting pipe or hose damage should be checked, which has to be replaced soon to avoid further fluid loss.

Presence of Air in the Brake Line

This defect arise particular in disc brake assembly because disc brake works with incompressible brake oil. This incompressible oil acts as a linkage between brake lever and calliper piston. It is a way by which brake lever force gets magnified and applied to the calliper piston. For this purpose, brake oil should have high viscosity. This whole system fails even if a small amount of air enters into the brake line because air is a compressible fluid. Air remains in the form of bubble and compresses itself at the time of braking, resulting in reduced braking effect.

Possible Causes and Remedies

Only leakage can produce air bubble in brake line. Reservoir or calliper may have some defects causing the leak of air inside the system. This leakage should be repaired or replaced if required. Any loose connection can be tightened properly to avoid any air bubble to form. The very safe remedy for air bubble is bleeding of brakes. It is advisable to perform this maintenance process at genuine service station.

Suzuki was the first one to kick off things in both the 4 wheelers and 2 wheelers categories. Their launches were scheduled right at 9:00 am in the morning of the inaugural day of 5th January. As we have reported live on that day that they launched the 110cc mass market motorcycle Hayate and the more contemporary looking 125cc scooter Swish125.

All along, I was listening to their theme music 'Apna Way of Life' which was striking. The products were launched by Mr. Ichiro Kondo who is the Managing Director of SMIPL (Suzuki Motorcycles India Pvt Ltd).

With Hayate Suzuki has cleared its intention of becoming a big mass player in India. And their show at the expo sneaked their intentions as they displayed almost there complete lineup available in India along with a few foreign showcases.

Right from the smallest electric scooter e-Let's to the ultimate sports Hayabusa and the IntruderM1800R they had everything on display. We take you to a visual tour of Suzuki's stall to ensure you do not miss out on any advancement which had happened at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2012 at Pragati Maidan Delhi.

White Hayate

First up was a White Hayate with flowing red stickers and it did look pretty good in this color. Powered by a 112.8cc air cooled, 4 stroke single cylinder SOHC engine, Hayate is Suzuki's first motorcycle in this most voluminous segment.

Orange Slingshot Plus

Though it is not a very famous bike in its segment but it still is a no-nonsense commuter. It is powered by a 4 stroke 124cc engine and is priced pretty well for its segment.

White GS150R

Seems like Suzuki is fond of white colors and the recently refreshed GS150R looked fantastic in white color. This bike, powered by a 4 stroke air cooled 149.5cc engine commands a lot of respect in this segment.

Black Intruder M800

The smaller sibling, which is big enough to gulp down big roads, was launched in India not very long ago. In its own tune Intruder M800 looks fabulous. This bike is powered by a 4 stroke 2 cylinder 45 degree V-twin 805cc engine. It comes at an ex-showroom price of 8,88,000 Delhi.

Blue Intruder M1800

The big daddy of cruisers, Intruder M1800 is one big insane looking machine and in Blue, it made its own territory at the stall attracting everyone towards it. It sports a huge 4 stroke 2 cylinder liquid cooled 1783cc Vtwin engine inclined at 54degrees from each other.

White & Maroon Hayabusas

The powerpacked ultimate sports and probably one of the most famous big bikes in India, Hayabusa was displayed in two different colors – white and maroon. Powered by a huge 1340cc 4 stroke 4 cylinder liquid cooled DOHC engine which enables this bike to insane performance. This was once the fastest commercially available bike of the world.

Red Access125

One of the most potent scooters in India, Access125 has a big fan following here. This family oriented 125cc scooter sports a 124cc 4 stroke single cylinder OHC mill which boasts very good torque figures for our kind of traffics.

Blue Swish125

Completing the Indian lineup was the latest launch from Suzuki, Swish125 in sparkling Blue color. Sharing the same engine with Access125 under similar specs, Swish125 would strengthen Suzuki's hold in the scooter segment.

Then there was a revolving stand which housed and highlighted the latest mass market launches, Hayate and Swish125. Apart from these, Suzuki also displayed their cute electric scooter – e-Let's, offroading metal – MX450Z, touring breed – V-Strom 650ABS and the naked monster GSR750/A which are not a part of India's lineup and there was no word from Suzuki about these motorcycles' possible launch in India. However, one big miss was the Bandit 1250S which was not to be found at the whole stall.

All in all it was a dedicated effort from Suzuki and its latest launches would surely make things interesting in our 2 wheeler automotive scene for sure.

e-Let’s Electric Scooter Showcased by Suzuki at the Auto Expo 2012

Suzuki displayed a chic electric scooter called as e-Let's at the recently concluded Auto Expo 2012. The scooter had a huge box at the front which, though made sense, however took away all the front looks of it. Standing just beside the mighty Hayabusa, the scooter looked pretty small in size.

This scooter was supposed to get launched in Japan on 9th Janurary 2012.

Main pointers of the scooter are:

Zero emission
Highly Practical
High performance in-wheel motor
Regenerative Braking capability
Compact & lightweight chassis
Battery is charged from a 100V household outlet
On a single charge e-Let's can run for about 30 kilometers (when ridden at 30 kmph on level roads)
It had tons of carriage space – big box at the front, small box near the legs, and possibly some boot space under the seat as well.
Length x Width x Height – 1665 x 600 x 985 (all in mm)
Power Unit: AC synchronous Electric motor

Good for intra city short distance visits to shorter distances like nearby grocery shops, supermarkets or other places, this scooter makes pretty good sense. However, there was a clear mark 'Currently not sold in India' at the detail banner of the scooter. Neither did Suzuki mention or talk about this scooter anywhere. But I guess it might be kept by Suzuki to gauge public response of us, Indians and the growing trend of electric motors might push Suzuki to launch these kind of products here in India sooner than later.

Royal Enfield takes the crown of one of the most exciting two wheelers launches at the Auto Expo 2012. The Thunderbird 500 is definitely an enthusiast's delight from the very angle you look at it. Situated at not one of the very best of places, it seemed made out of a little haste.

However, the end product was very well done in the end.

The main attractions of Royal Enfields stall were:

Desert Storm Classic 500: I saw it live for the first time an fell in instant love. It looked raw and macho.

Matt Black Thunderbird 500: The matt Black Thunderbird 500 stole the show and by far. Every square inch of the motorcycle was classic to look at.

Metallic Black Thunderbird 500: Not as good looking as the Matt one, but still..!

Café Racer: Royal Enfield has been displaying this since I started reading about Auto Expos!

RE Merchandise: Then there was all this RE merchandise which signified masculinity right from leather belts, riding jackets to pants, helmets etc.

RE was the only other stall where I saw Harley lovers happy.

The iconic British motorcycle marque, Triumph Motorcycle showcased its 2012 line up for Indian market which includes 7 models ranging from Daytona 675 to Rocket III Roadster at Delhi Auto Expo, 2012. Triumph is in process of setting up 3-4 dealerships in the India this year. The first three dealerships will begin at Delhi, Mumbai and Banglore while the fourth dealership may find its way in Chandigadh later this year. The company will gradually increase its dealership count to 10-12 down the line three years.

Mr Ashish Joshi, MD, Triumph Motorcycles India, at the Delhi Auto Expo said, “2012 is a very crucial year for Triumph Motorcycles globally as we take our first steps into one of the most evolving motorcycle markets in the world. Our market entry is perfectly timed as Indian riders have been longing to be given the power of choice. With the first of our India lineup, our customer base will get the opportunity to choose from some of the most sought-after motorcycles in the world. We are extremely proud to present these to the Indian consumer.

Triumph model range will start from staggering `5,50,000 thanks to CKD route. The company will import four out of seven motorcycles via CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route from Thailand while three models will be imported on CBU (Completely Built Unit) basis. The four units which will be imported by CKD route are Bonneville, Street Triple 675, Speed Triple and Daytona 675 while the three units which will come through CBU route are Tiger 800XC, Storm, Rocket III Roadster. These motorcycles then will be assembled at Triumph's assembling plant in India. The location of Triumph's assembly plant is still not known. Note that CKD route attracts 60% import duty while the CBU route attracts 110% import duty. Triumph motorcycles are known for its consumer centric approach.

“The emphasis for Triumph Motorcycles across markets has always been to give our end-consumers an overall brand experience. With India being a very important part of our global strategy, we will be making conscious efforts to provide Indian customers with everything from genuine parts, unrivaled after-sales services to bonafide Triumph merchandise and accessories, through our dealership principals. This brand philosophy will form the cornerstone for all our plans for India,” added Mr Ashish.

Triumph is planning to retail its motorcycle from the June 2012 and due to its robust image it will surely give tough fight to its Japanese rivals Suzuki, Kawasaki, Yamaha and Honda and American rival Harley Davidson.

Suzuki Displays GS750/A & V-Strom 650 ABS at the Auto Expo 2012

Among the complete lineup of Suzuki motorcycles available in India, there were two new faces which had the public hooked – the tourer kind V-Strom 650 ABS and the orange naked GSR750/A. These two were not a part of the main Suzuki motorcycle stall and found place at the center podium.

The GSR750/A looked like a mean machine in white and its stats reveal that is powered by a 4 stroke, 4 cylinder liquid cooled DOHC 749cc engine which can produce power around 106bhp. The naked front fascia and the humped tank made it look extremely aggressive.

The V-Strom 650 ABS (notice it's not Storm), on the other hand is a tourer which is powered by a 4 stroke 90 degree V-twin liquid cooled 645cc motor. And as its name suggests it comes equipped with an Antilock Braking System (ABS).

Yet again, there was no word from Suzuki about their plans of launching either of these in India.

A bike, which company wants to introduce in market, gets its specifications determined after completing market survey. This process is further extended by converting different concepts in to sketches. At the end of these two processes, a clear-cut machine gets ready with tentative specifications, dimensions, and appearance. At the end of sketching process, these all manuscripts are handed over to engineers for further built up. Engineers' job is to generate precise, efficient, optimum and economic parts within the stipulated overall dimensions. We can consider engineers' responsibilities as core fortification of this whole bike producing process.

As we had discussed in previous part, a complete surface model of bike is prepared to get idea about boundaries. Engineers are supposed to mould each and every part within these boundaries. No doubt, they can enlarge or slim down some dimensions if required, but these alterations always remain in small limits. Truly speaking, some enlargements or slimming downs in dimensions always exist because of engineering requirements.

More than 1000 parts are assembled together to build a bike. These 1000 parts include large parts like fuel tank and very small parts like nut-bolt. Each and every part requires tremendous consideration and importance. This special treatment has been taken as much more vital factor since last 15-20 years. Earlier parts were designed with extra strength which obviously resulted in high production costs, wastage of material and high fuel consumptions. Optimization of each part became mainstay objective of automotive industry after realization of extra cost and wastage. This optimization resulted in enormous technological revolution in the automotive industry. Today's high performance bikes are the best examples of this technological revolution of optimization.

Coming back to the point, we can distinguish this whole process of modelling into five distinct phases.

Team Categorization

It is not at all possible for one engineer to generate models of all parts within specified time limit. Here, team work comes into picture when entire machine has to be assembled on computer screen within specified period of time. Teams are decided according to the systems. That means, one team works on engine, other works on transmission, next works on frame etc. Each team has specified work to do with determined inputs. Each and every team starts working with all the essential data required to generate 3D models.

Many reputed entrepreneurs have developed their economy as a result of outsourcing done during this modelling process. Core companies prefer outsourcing for 3D modelling rather than establishing huge computer set-ups along with the costly softwares. In addition, they have to appoint efficient employs to defend their software investment. So core companies use to have their few teams who monitor all the matters related to 3D modelling with vendor companies.

Material Selection

Today's modelling software allows engineers to have smooth process of material selection. Material selection is very significant step in bike designing process as manufacturability, production cost, weight distribution of bike, bike's performance, bike's appearance etc depends on materials only. Engineers use to select the material with the help of on hand data, derived from past results. In engineering, it is known as design data. Material selection process for a particular component includes various considerations related with it like, its function, loading cycle, properties required, maximum cost for raw material a company can bear, manufacturing quantity, manufacturing cost, maximum life span, availability of material itself etc.

Almost all the modelling software comes along with material selection database. This helps to generate components with original physical properties. Engineer instantly gets the idea about weight, CG, mass distribution and appearance etc. Today's softwares have become so much advanced that one can generate a single component with different material compositions along with exact physical properties. It also helps to avoid extra cost required to generate specimen components.

Modelling

It has become easy for engineers to produce 3D models of standard components with the help of readymade libraries. All the modelling softwares come along with definite readymade libraries. One has to just import the model and has to change its dimensions as and where required. Parametric modelling also helps engineers to save their valuable time. Parametric facility offers a stunning advantage of dimensional change within fraction of time. Engineers have to change only one dimension of the component and other related dimensions got changed accordingly and automatically.

It is obvious that engineers need to have few data to make a decision about component's dimensions. This data starts from predicted engine capacity, power output and torque output. Engineers can calculate tentative dimensions for engine components with the help of these three digits. Then sequence flows as transmission, wheels, fuel supply system, frame, lubrication system, seats, electricals, all rubber parts, suspensions and brakes. Suspension dimensions are decided after deciding total sprung and unsprung masses. Brake dimensions are decided at last after deciding total weight to be stopped from highest speed.

Engineers have to generate new models for those parts which don't lie under the category of standard parts. So many operations and tools are available with modelling softwares which makes the things very easy and fast. No doubt, it requires lot of training and practice to identify correct and easiest paths for fussy modelling.

CAM

It is an aspect of 3D modelling related to manufacturing ease. In today's manufacturing industry, it is possible to manufacture almost all kind of components with the help of NC and CNC machines but it doesn't possible to generate each and every kind of shape, particularly in castings because casting is a very brittle material. Let's say for example, an engineer generates six holes on the component's surface in 3D model. Afterwards, he comes to know that it's not possible physically to drill those locations. In that case, he has to repeat his exercises which obviously consumes time and cost.

Engineers are using computer aided manufacturing facilities to avoid these kinds of misinterpretations. CAM is an interface between computer and CNC machine. It provides the facility to convert co-ordinates of 3D models into various programming languages of NC or CNC machines. It also facilitates engineers to check manufacturing aspects of any component without its physical built-up. So it becomes possible for engineers to adjust wrong attributes of any component which could be problematic in manufacturing process.

Assembling

There are two different phases come under this tag. First is system assembly in which different components are assembled together on computer screen to form a system. Second is complete assembly in which different systems are assembled to form a complete bike. As mentioned earlier, different teams or different vendor companies work on different systems simultaneously. So at the end of the modelling process, each team or vendor company comes out with total assembly of different systems. Monitoring team of Core Company collects all these system models in which all the individual component models are also made available.

Obviously scope for minor changes always takes place as different systems have been modelled by different teams. Several minor mismatches come up when all systems and all components are assembled on one screen. It is an easy job for engineers to eliminate these mismatches, thanks to parametric modelling. We can consider it as a final step towards completion of modelling process.

Engineers can have all the necessary data of bike after completion of total assembly. This data includes all geometries, all dimensions, CG point, weight distribution, total weight, and all the specifications. Bike model is ready to get analyzed. TVS Motor Company, which is the third largest two – wheeler manufacturer in the country, said that its proposed operations in the state of West Bengal will most probably be scaled up. The company, which had an initial annual production plan of about 20,000 units of two – wheelers at its Uluberia facility in Howrah, is most likely to expand its production capacities in the comng years, according to Mr. Venu Srinivasan, Chairman and Managing Director, TVS Motors.

"This plant (at Uluberia) will be catering to the eastern parts of the country. We hope to start with 20,000 vehicles a year and then, as the market grows, it will grow," Mr Srinivasan said, adding that his vision was to increase the production capacities to "a couple of lakhs" in a five-year period.

The Chennai-headquartered Rs 1,633 crore – company had decided in the year 2011 to resume its operations of its franchise – operated motorcycle assembly unit – Mahabharat Motors at Uluberia in the Indian state of Bengal. Mahabharat Motors Manufacturing Company is owned by Mr. Prasun Mukherjee of Universal Success Enterprises.

"We have not come here (in West Bengal) with a small plant in mind, and as the market develops, I am sure that we will require plants in different parts of the country," Mr Srinivasan said on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of Bengal Leads 2012 – a business-to-business investment summit organized by the State Government.

TVS Motors currently has one manufacturing facility catering the markets to the Northern part of India and two in the states of South India. "For plants in the East and West we are looking at a five year horizon," he said.

Responding to a query on setting up ancillary units at its Uluberia facility, Mr Srinivasan said, "Once the autos come, ancillaries will follow. But volumes will have to reach the levels first."

When asked about starting production from its Uluberia unit, Mr Prasun Mukherjee, TVS’s partner in the Bengal project, said that all the necessary clearances have been obtained from the State Government.

The company, he said, was awaiting permission for demerger from the Calcutta High Court in order to start operations.

"We are looking for the High Court to clear the whole thing (demerger process). As far as the Government is concerned, it has given all the clearances," Mr Mukherjee said.

Displaying technical prowess in all segments, Suzuki also had on display the RMZ450Z for the serious fun seekers which is inspired from the Championship winning RM Z450.

This bike occupied a small corner of the stall which was made specifically dedicated for it. In yellow color, with '207' at the head, RMZ had 'Raid De Himalaya' written all over it.

Aprilia RSV4 Factory APRC

India is gonna be the biggest global market for Japanese giant Honda’s two – wheeler business by the year 2015 before eventually accounting for around 30 per cent of its overall market share. At present, the share is 13 per cent but the company is concentrating on new product launches as part of the company's aggressive growth strategy.

The 110 cc bike – Dream Yuga, which was unveiled at the Auto Expo 2012, will roll out this year for the mass market which is a segment in which Honda’s ex – alliance partner, the Hero group dominates with the Splendor and Passion brands which reigns the segment.

The 'Yuga' bike is expected to be priced competitively at around INR 45,000, which could give the company the much needed momentum to increase its market share in the sub – continent. The other launches from the company included an upgraded 110cc Dio scooter as well as the CBR 150R and the CBR 250R bikes.

Officials said Honda R&D would now work closely with the Manesar operations of HMSI (Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India), which would facilitate faster product launches in the coming years. In addition, the company will increase the number of its zonal offices and training centers keeping in mind the growing demand from smaller towns and the need to be closer to this critical buyer base.

This time, Honda is determined to make up the lost numbers ceded to the Hero group, which works out to over five million units annually. The new revised strategy will be part of an aggressive play in the pricing segment while the company also offers top quality products.

In this process, India will take over from Indonesia and Vietnam as Honda’s biggest two – wheeler market over the next five years. As for the bigger goal of 30 per cent share in its global business, Honda’s annual two – wheeler volumes here would have to be in the region of 10 million units annually. Industrial observers believe that this could become a reality by the year 2020 (Finally, we've got one more reason to mention the year 2020!)

Presently, somewhere around four million units are in place from its three units in Manesar (which is the largest with 1.6 million), the recently commissioned Rajasthan plant and the newly identified site in Karnataka (with capacities of 1.2 million units each). The balance six million bikes and scooters, in that case, will have to be generated from new facilities even as reports are already doing the rounds that Honda is looking at options in the western and southern regions post the year 2014.

Now, the iconic bike maker Harley – Davidson is looking beyond India's metro cities for growth in its sales figures and is eyeing smaller cities and towns in order to achieve its target of 40 per cent of sales to come from outside the US by the year 2014 (which is just not far at all).The company's Indian arm which is Harley – Davidson India presently has seven dealerships across the sub – continent and is now looking to open new ones in the Indian cities of Kolkata, Jaipur and Kochi so as to aid expansion in a rapid manner. The company also feels that there is a considerable amount if demand from other cities as well

"Gradually, we have been ramping up our operations. We have also been able to increase the number of models assembled in India to five. There is a latent demand for our bikes in smaller towns across India apart from metros. So we will be going there," Harley – Davidson India Director – Marketing, Mr. Sanjay Tripathi told the PTI in a recent interview.

Mr. Sanjay also said that while metros would continue to account for more sales for the company, the smaller towns "will help in expanding the Harley-Davidson culture".

In the first quarter of this year – 2012, the company will open a showroom in Kolkata. This will be followed by new showrooms at Jaipur and Kochi by the fourth quarter of the calendar year, Mr. Tripathi added.

"Since the time we formally entered India in July, 2010, we have sold over 1,000 bikes, which is a good number, and we are confident of India also contributing significantly as Harley-Davidson targets 40 per cent of sales to come from outside of the US by 2014," he said.

He then added a fact that 'at present, about 35.7 per cent of Harley-Davidson's sales come from outside the US.'

As of now, the company sells 15 models in India for the domestic market, out of which five are assembled at its facility at Bawal, in Haryana, which is Harley – Davidson's second plant outside the US after Brazil.

Asked if the company plans to assemble more models in India, Mr Tripathi said any move would depend on market demand, just as in the case of the recent decision by the company to assemble two of its models, 'Street Bob' and 'Super Glide Custom', in the country.

Earlier, the company was assembling only its 'Superflow', 'Iron 883' and 'Forty Eight' models at the Bawal plant.

Mahindra & Mahindra's two wheeler arm – Mahindra 2 Wheelers is trying to mark its foothold very strongly in the Indian market where the growth of the number of two – wheelers is on a growing rise as time keeps passing.

Mahindra & Mahindra said that it will leverage its marketing network for four – wheelers and farm equipment to export motorcycles from India in the near future.Mahindra 2 Wheelers expects to re – launch its 110 cc motorcycle, Stallio in the next few months after sorting out the initial technical problems which the bike faced, off late."We have prepared a blue-print for exports of motorcycles from India. We will start it as soon as we launch the Stallio in the domestic market. We will be leveraging on the global network of Mahindra's four-wheeler and farm equipment sectors," Mahindra 2 Wheelers' President Mr. Anoop Mathur told the PTI in a recent interview.

The company is also aiming a few foreign markets to grow up in a sustained manner. Asked what markets the company is looking at, he said it will target Latin America, Africa and Central Asia.

"We will target those markets where the Indian OEMs are currently exporting," he added.

On whether the company's blue-print for exports included setting up of assembly plants overseas, he said, "It will depend on the market. If directly selling CBUs does not make sense, then we are open to setting up of plants."

The company displayed the new Stallio motorcycle at the 11th Auto Expo in its stall, almost a year after an earlier variant of the model which was discontinued due to faulty auto parts and some technical issues as well.

Commenting on this, Mahindra & Mahindra Vice Chairman and MD Mr Anand Mahindra said: "We have got feedback from customers about the Stallio. We will incorporate all the feedback and lessons in the new Stallio."

The Stallio was launched for the Indian market in the year 2010 with 'Aamir Khan' as the brand ambassador for this particular bike. Customers faced some problems pertaining to the suspension og the Stallio, owing to which the production of the model was temporarily halted.

The company had admitted that certain parts of the bike required fine-tuning and adjustment was necessary with respect to a small proportion of the entire product.

Mahindra Two-Wheelers also launched a new version of its Duro scooter, by the name Duro DZ for the Indian market.

I don't think I really need to give any introduction about the 'Victor' brand of bikes from TVS Motors. The brand which made the company a great player in the bike market was endorsed for a long time by 'Master-Blaster' – Sachin Tendulkar. The one with the violet color scheme was a big hit in the Indian market. Still, they give me a nostalgic feel as and when I see them along our roads.

TVS Motors still markets the 'Victor GLX 125', which is based on the same old platform in the Indonesian market. Business Line had recently reported, 'In a bid to improve its market share, TVS Motor Company plans to re-introduce its Victor brand of bikes by December this year. This is part of the two new bike and two scooter models it expects to launch in 2012.'The new models mentioned here will also include a 125 cc bike launch in June and another 125 cc scooter which will be introduced in the month of December. TVS Motors is also working on more 250 cc and 300 cc segment, the launch of which will be around two years away. This just means that wonderful products are awaiting for India from TVS stable in just a few years down the line.

TVS Motors is increasing its output capacity of its two and three wheelers to 3.2 million units by 2013-14, from 2.8 million units, a company official said. The company is also planning to invest about INR 160 crore for the expansion.

To talk about the future plans, the company also plans to introduce a hybrid scooter in the Indian market – Qube by the year 2013. (We'd reported a lot about the Qube as part of our Auto Expo 2012 coverage.) The Qube will have a 100cc four – stroke petrol engine, running parallel with an electric motor on lithium – ion batteries. Expect the pricing of this scooter at a price band of around INR 60k to 70k.

Such similar concepts were also showcased in the expo by other companies such as HMC (Hero MotoCorp) and Mahindra 2Wheelers. About 200 units of Qube models will be run as a test -marketing and production trial exercise from the month of June this year itself, a company official said.

BMW Motorrad, a luxury motorcycle manufacturer from Germany, showcased its two motorcycles at Auto Expo 2012. BMW showcased R1200GS and 2012 S1000RR. Both the motorcycles are currently sold by BMW Mottard in India along with several other motorcycle models. However, the 2012 S1000RR is an upgraded version of 2011 S1000RR which is something new. BMW S1000RR is known worldwide for its power to weight ratio. Let's have a look at both the motorcycles.

2012 S1000RR

Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) is the most prestigious awards of the Indian automotive industry for motorcycle. While a few companies missed out the opportunity and a few were not present, Honda made full use of the glare and announced the beginning of a new era in India and an Indian specific brand identity. It was pretty evident that Honda would go bonkers after their split with the very successful partners Hero motors in the JV between them and the end results are for all of us to see.

This marked the company's entry in the mass market segment with the launch of 110cc Dream Yuga and a direct rival to everyone present in this segment specially the maximum market shareholder Hero MotoCorp. Honda also unveiled 7 new products to mark the occasion big which covered all spectrums of two-wheeled automobiles.

On the occasion, Honda also introduced the Global Brand Slogan in India – 'The Power of Dreams'. Indian specific identity for the company would be represented by the slogan 'Sach Kardenge Sapne'. All this big hype clearly suggested Honda's intentions and seriousness towards the Indian market.

Honda also put on display 'Dream D' as well as the RC212V motorcycles. It was evident that among the two wheelers it was Honda which stole the thunder from all the manufacturers here at the Auto Expo and they ensured everything makes a big mark in history.

I am pretty confident of Honda's success here in India and I feel it would snatch the top position from Hero in a matter of few years. Do you echo the same thoughts?

Probably the most exciting two wheeler company of Auto Expo 2012, Honda had grand plans for the show which all went fruitful. Honda unveiled/released/launched the maximum number of two wheelers among the mass players. All in all Honda had the following machines at their stall:

RC212V: Honda had on display the mercilessly fast and accurate racing motorcycle RC212V at the Auto Expo to display company's technical prowess. The RC212V sports an 800cc engine to race at the MotoGP series.

Developed by the Honda Racing Corporation, RC212V is a successor to RC211V and was introduced back in October 2006. The name could be decrypted as:

RC – Honda's tradition racing prefix for 4 stroke bikes
212 – second works bike of the 21st century
V – V engine

The 800cc engine is Liquid Cooled, DOHC 4 Valve V4 and capable of producing ruthless 210+ bhp. Despite all this, the bike weighs only 150kg+. The orange color beauty really seemed to attract the maximum number of people and was kept just at the entry of the stall. It was this bike on which Casey Stoner won the MotoGP Title in 2011. Dream D: At the other end, Honda also showcased their rich heritage apart from their racing prowess. On display was the successful mass production motorcycle launched way back in 1949 – Dream D. This iconic bike was powered by a 98cc, 2 stroke motor and debuted in August 1949. Standing beside the latest entry Dream Yuga, Dream D made a classic statement of its own.

Honda celebrated 20 years of its first global launch as the CBR900RR in 1991 in style with the launch of the insane powerhouse the 20th Anniversary special edition of CBR1000RR Fireblade.

The supersports liter class now comes with the following changes:

New Fuel Injection settings which makes the engine smoother specially at lower rpms
Combined Anti-Lock Braking System (Combined ABS)
Introduction of 'Balance Free Rear Cushion' suspension which is the first time introduced on a production motorcycle according to Honda. It ensures more accurate response, better damping and enhanced traction.

Just for the records, Fireblade sports a Liquid Cooled 4 stroke 16 valve DOHC Inline 4 engine with a displacement of 999cc and is capable of producing 131KW of max power @ 12000 rpm and a heavenly 112Nm of torque at 8500 rpm – Now this is what a true blue supersports is..! As mentioned earlier, this year will be much more promising than the previous year for the superbike segment. Apart from Triumph Motorcycle, we are now going to see Victory Motorcycle in India very soon. Victory Motorcycle is a subsidiary of Polaris Industries which is known for its snowmobiles and ATV (all terrain vehicle). Victory Motorcycle is known for its touring, sports touring and cruiser motorcycles. Its motorcycles come with an American style V-Twin engine. To better describe Victory motorcycle one line is enough, it is the motorcycle brand which directly compete with Harley Davidson. Look wise Victory Motorcycle most of the model looks more or less similar in its category. Now about the models it showcased at Auto Expo 2012. The first model showcased at Auto Expo 2012 was Vegas Jackpot in a black color. Vegas Jackpot is a custom cruiser motorcycle and it is made for reflecting its owner's personality.

Here are the points which make Vegas Jackpot special from other motorcycles.

It comes with 106 cubic inch freedom V-twin engine which has displacement of 1731cc and generates 97 bhp and 153 Nm of torque, which suggest that its typical cruiser engine. The engine is tuned for low end torque. The engine note is unique and you can identify that Victory Motorcycle has arrived. It has 6-speed overdrive transmission which is specially designed for cruising in the city and one of the best transmissions in class. The gearshift is smooth thanks to helical-cut gears. The V-twin, 4-Valve overhead cam's perfect combination with 6-speed transmission provides an unmatchable acceleration feel and throttle response.

The dashboard and handlebar are typical American cruiser type, while the headlight and taillight looks unique and royal. The very special thing about this motorcycle is it comes with 250 mm rear tire something which makes road grip firm and enhances confidence at high speed cruising and in wet conditions. Further, it comes with custom 21-inch anvil billet front wheel which adds four stars in motorcycle looks. What's more, you can also customize your Vegas Jackpot motorcycle like customized paint scheme, and color matched frame.

Overall this is a perfect motorcycle to be an option for those who don't like Harley Davidson's rugged image as Victory somewhat feels like gentleman's cruiser. Beside this Victory Motorcycle also displayed its Vision Tour motorcycle. Although, these two models were on display, the company did not specify which models it will bring to India and what price point. Its range starts from ` 7 lacs in US. However, if Victory motorcycle will bring it by CBU (completely built unit) or CKD (completely knocked down) route then the range may start from ` 11 lacs to ` 15 lacs depending upon the route selected. There is also possibility that it will go like Harley Davidson way and then will have local assembly plant here which will drastically reduce cost. There are fair chances of local assembly plant as Polaris Industries also owns Indian Motorcycle which it purchased in April 2011 and Victory Motorcycle launched may be followed by Indian Motorcycle within one or two years.

New Honda CB Shine 125 Preview (Launched at Auto Expo 2012)

Among the big launches from Honda's stables there were subtle changes done to the existing 125cc warhorse from the company as well. The New Honda CB Shine comes with new graphics and new colors along with some new features.

Though in a typical fashion the changes were too subtle to be noticed by my naked eye. The following seem to be new on the refreshed bike:

New refreshed and 'standout' graphics
Introduction of 2 new colors – Force Silver Metallic & Monsoon Grey Metallic
Tubeless Tyres: I am not sure if the existing variant had Tubeless tyres in higher variants but the new one surely has them.

The new avatar would soon make it to the showrooms and would be available in 3 variants

Spoke Wheels with Drum Brakes (with Tuff-up Tubes)
Alloy Wheels with Drum Brakes (with Tubeless Tyres)
Alloy Wheels with Disc Brakes (with Tubeless Tyres)

Going by the press release shared by Honda the following are the main points about the bike now.

Shine happens to be the highest selling 125cc bike in India
Ok, so the changes are new 'standout' graphics and refreshed looks
Engine bits and other stuff remains the same – 10.3bhp @ 7500 rpm
Tuff-up tubes
Body colored grab-rails, handle bar weight
Newly designed rear view mirrors and a 3D emblem.
Shine was launched back in 2006
Introduction of the new color takes the total tally to 5 color options including the existing ones – Black, Geny Grey Metallic and Rebel Red Metallic. Out of the new colors grey colored Shine was on display.

Frankly speaking it's hard to notice the change of graphics, they are so similar. Still if it keeps the model fresh in the market with a minimal investment, whats wrong with that. No mention of any kind of price change on Shine was mentioned by Honda.
